The Chicago Chamber of Commerce, now known as the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, was chartered in 1887, but not officially formed until 1904. Emerging from the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chamber became a voluntary association of area businesses that promoted the economic development of Chicago and the interests of its membership at the local, state, and federal levels. The Chicago Chamber of Commerce Records include minutes, notes, and reports from meetings of the Board of Directors, clippings, a published tract by Robert Lindblom, and two large ledgers containing administrative records, financial information, and related materials.

Administrative History

The Chicago Chamber of Commerce, now known as the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, was chartered in 1887, but not officially formed until 1904. Emerging from the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chamber became a voluntary association of area businesses that promoted the economic development of Chicago and the interests of its membership at the local, state, and federal levels. Some of the Chambers early achievements include improvements in fast freight service for members and the promotion of business education in Chicago area colleges and universities such as the School of Commerce founded at Northwestern University in 1908.

Scope and Contents

The Chicago Chamber of Commerce records include minutes, notes, and reports from meetings of the Board of Directors, clippings, a published tract by Robert Lindblom, and two large ledgers containing administrative records, financial information, and related materials. Materials are arranged by chronological order except for the ledgers stored separately in oversize boxes.
