Edith and Grace Abbott lived at Hull-House and were founders of the Immigrants' Protective League. The Edith and Grace Abbott collection consists of articles, book reviews, newspaper clippings, yearbook, letters, memorials, reports, addresses, and writings.

Biographical Sketch

Edith and Grace Abbott were born in Grand Island, Nebraska in 1876 and 1878 respectively. Their parents were Othman A. and Elizabeth Griffin Abbott who also had two other children. Both sisters moved to Chicago and lived at Hull-House and were founders of the Immigrants' Protective League.

Edith Abbott was a pioneer in developing the curriculum for the professional education program for social work at the University of Chicago. She eventually became the Dean of the School of Social Science. Miss Edith Abbott died in 1957.

Grace Abbott's career was in the field of public welfare with a concentration on the problems of labor as well as children. She became the head of the United States Children's Bureau. Miss Grace Abbott died in 1939.

The Edith and Grace Abbott collection consists of articles, book reviews, newspaper clippings, yearbook, letters, memorials, reports, addresses, and writings. This collection of original manuscripts and photocopies covers the time period of 1908 to 1965.
