Administrative History of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church

The Emmanuel Presybyterian Church located at 1850 S. Racine, Chicago, Illinois played an active role in efforts by the United Presbyterian Church and United Church of Christ to proselytize communities of Latino immigrants in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Rev. Jose Burgos sought both to spread his Protestant faith among his fellow Latinos in Chicago and to improve their general living conditions. Rev. Burgos urged Latinos to change their self-perception and reject their inferior status. He raised funds to provide college education and job training for youth, stressed the need for Spanish language television and radio in the United States, helped to organize community organizations to defend residents from the harsh consequences of some urban renewal projects, and called for greater cooperation among Latino religious, cultural, and political organizations.
