Franklin J. Meine (1896-1968) was the editor of the American Peoples Encyclopedia and a collector of American regional and folk humor. This collection consists of correspondence, notes, source material, articles and clippings, photographs, sheet music, cartoons, newspapers, comics and published materials.

Biographical Sketch

Franklin J. Meine (1896-1968) was the editor of the American Peoples Encyclopedia and a collector of American regional and folk humor. Meine was active in Chicago literary societies such as the Cliffdwellers and the Caxton Club. His publications included Tall Tales of the Southwest: an Anthology of Southern and Southwestern Humor, 1830-1860 (1930); Mike Fink: King of Mississippi Keelboatmen, co-authored with Walter Blair (1933); and several Caxton Club publications.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of correspondence, notes, source material, articles and clippings, photographs, sheet music, cartoons, newspapers, comics and published materials. The collection deals primarily with American humorists, folklore, and regional cultures, especially life on the Mississippi river.
