Administrative History

The Independent Democratic Coalition was founded in Chicago in 1969, quickly thereafter affiliating with the New Democratic Coalition. During a relatively short history, IDC organized several conferences and affected change in Chicago's machine politics through the endorsement of non-machine candidates and other grassroots organizing. The 1968 Democratic Convention held in Chicago provided a dramatic backdrop and formative moment for left-leaning Democrats across the United States. The Democratic Party struggled over many issues, but especially over the Viet Nam war. President Johnson announced that he would not seek re-election, but Vice President Hubert Humphrey quickly emerged as the likely candidate. Anti-war party members nominated Senator McGovern, and the split within the party manifested clearly. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Chicago's police violently reaction to a concurrent anti-war protest, the Convention signaled a key moment for reform-minded democrats. Following the Convention, several veterans from the McCarthy, Kennedy and McGovern campaigns formed the Independent Democratic Coalition (IDC) to address their growing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party. Initially an independent organization, they later affiliated with the New Democratic Coalition (NDC), a national organization also formed in the wake of the1968 Convention. IDC took an active role in several aspects of Chicago politics. They endorsed and campaigned for reform-minded candidates at both at the city and state level, organized conferences dedicated to election reform, engaged with delegate selection for the Illinois Constitutional Convention, and networked with other state organizations around national election issues. IDC engaged in voter registration, challenged the Illinois Democratic Party, organized local chapters for NDC in outlying areas, and monitored issues such as redistricting and election reform initiatives. After 1970, IDC's activities declined as a result of its members' involvement in other organization. In 1973, IDC officially disbanded.
