Reverend James Luther Bevel (b. 1963) was a leader in the civil rights movement and an active member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The collection contains written comments by James Bevel, an interview with Bevel, an issue of the SCLC Newsletter and a newspaper clipping. The materials pertain to the SCLC's campaign for desegregated housing in Chicago in 1966.

Biographical Sketch

Reverend James Luther Bevel (b. 1963) was a leader in the civil rights movement and an active member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Bevel joined the SCLC as a student at the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville Tennessee in 1960s. There, he participated in sit-ins at segregated lunch counters and "Freedom Rides" to protest segregated interstate travel and accommodation in the South. He was a leader in a number of civil rights campaigns including the Mississippi Voters Project in 1962, the Birmingham "Children's Crusade" in 1963, the March on Washington in 1963, the Selma to Montgomery March for voting rights in Alabama in 1965 and the Poor People's Campaign in 1968. Bevel was also directly involved in the SCLC's Chicago Movement for open housing led by Dr. Martin Luther King in 1966.
