Detailed Description/Box and Folder Listing

Series I. Bridges, Viaducts, and Underpasses

BoxFolder
A favored city from its founding, Chicago largely owed its origin and fortune to the modest river which formed its first attraction and focus, and later, with increasing population and economic growth, its greatest obstacle to land transportation and communication. Today Chicago is the City of Bridges and its streets cross the Chicago River and its branches with ease and economy. This the City owes to its own special kind of bride, the Chicago-type trunnion bascule, the culmination of 150 years of evolution, a bridge with a brilliant past and bright prospects for the future. The collection of 8 x 10 prints of Chicago bridges includes photographs by the Chicago Aerial Photographing Company and prints by the early Twentieth Century photographers Peter Fish and Frank Hallenbeck.

Series II. Architecture by Street Name

BoxFolder
Copelin Commercial Photographers recorded exteriors and interiors of buildings that Chicago's building inspectors visited when they investigated problematic structures during the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. Some general views of streets and intersections taken for the Department of Streets and Sanitation, as well as major commercial buildings also fill out the picture of various neighborhoods. The following items list street names followed by specific addresses within parentheses as well as intersection coordinates and landmark building names.

Series III. Bronzeville

BoxFolder
Bronzeville is an historically significant area of the city of Chicago. Geographically, the Second and Third Wards were bounded by 22nd Street on the north and 51st Street on the south and Cottage Grove on the east and the Rock Island Railroad on the west. Many citizens of color resented having their neighborhoods referred to as the "Black Belt" or "Black Ghetto" by the major media. The Chicago Bee, suggested that they use his coined word Bronzeville to identify the community, since it more accurately described the skin tone of most of its inhabitants. The James S. Parker Collection contains a remarkable collection of structures that were demolished in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In 2002 Jr. Parker returned to the sights where many of these buildings were located and documented the view that currently exists.

Chicago Public Schools: During the mid-1990s the Chicago Board of Education hired Copelin Commercial Photographers to take photographs of the city's educational facilities in an effort to assess the extent of the repairs necessary to improve the physical conditions of schools. Assignment sheets accompanying the negatives describe the content of the photos. In many cases a photographer may have recorded images from several schools on one role of film. Note that "see" and "see also" references indicate that you may need to consult several folders to find all images related to a particular public school. Contents of each folder are listed by order of date on which the photographer visited them. Addresses are included in the finding aid because schools sometimes change names.

Series VIII Water Management. Intake

BoxFolder
On January 1, 2003, The Chicago Department of Water Management came into being. It is a combination of the old Department of Water with the Department of Sewers. Chicago acquires its water from Lake Michigan through a network of tunnels that lead from intake cribs off shore to filtration plants and pumping stations.

Series IX. Sewers

BoxFolder
According to "Down the Drain" (Steve Jones of the Chicago Public Library and John Waller of the Chicago Department of Sewers. http://www.chipublib.org/digital/sewers/sewers.html) the Chicago Department of Sewers presently administers more than 4,300 miles of sewer pipe, 230,000 catch basins and 148,000 manholes. The most notable achievement of the Department of Sewers and the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is the construction of the Tunnel and Reservoir Project (TARP), or the "Deep Tunnel". It consists of a series of tunnels and reservoirs, some dug as deep as 360 feet, constructed parallel to Chicago's river systems. The system, when complete will extend more than 130 miles. TARP is constructed utilizing a tunnel-boring machine (TBM) called "the Mole" which cuts a hole 33.5 feet in diameter through bedrock deep beneath Chicago's surface. The same equipment was used to construct the "Chunnel" beneath the English Channel between England and France. The James S. Parker Collection is particularly rich in sewer information in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 when the City of Chicago commissioned Copelin Commercial Photographers to record the locations of sewers, manholes and drains throughout the city. The images also present a view of the streets and intersections where the sewers are located. Accompanying assignment sheets describe locations of each frame of 35 mm negatives. Sheets are arranged chronologically within each folder. Negatives without contact sheets follow those bearing dates.
