Administrative History of the Ladies' Association for Educating Females

The Ladies Association for Educating Females was established in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1833 with the aim of encouraging and assisting young women to become teachers. The Association, later known as the Ladies' Education Society, was organized and staffed by women who raised and distributed funds to pay for books and tuition for female students. As free public schools were created in Illinois, the Association reduced its charitable activities and became more focused on its Banister Fund that made loans to young women in their final year of study. These student loans would be interest free if paid within one year (subject to six percent interest after that period). The Association while accepting the premise that women's education need not be equal to that of men argued that general human progress and welfare would be improved through the education of women and the presence of a large cadre of female teachers, especially for young pupils.
