Administrative History of the Lawndale Community Development Conference

The Lawndale Community Development Conference was held in June 1977 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, George W. Collins High School, and other locations in the North Lawndale Community Area (29) in Chicago, Illinois to address important social problems. The City of Chicago annexed the eastern part of North Lawndale in 1869. "Lawndale," as dubbed by the Millard and Deeker real estate firm, grew substantially after 1900 as large manufacturing plants were developed in the area and nearby suburbs such as Cicero. Predominately a Russian Jewish neighborhood before World War II, the area had a predominately African-American population by 1960. North Lawndale experienced many of Chicago's most pressing social problems in the latter half of the 20th Century including "white flight," riots in 1968, and the virtual abandonment of the community by business as declining profits and rising insurance costs made most economic activity unsustainable. Although the population of North Lawndale has declined steadily since the early 1960s, housing and employment prospects have shrunk even faster.
