Abstract:
Lawrence J. Gutter was a graduate of the University of Illinois at Navy Pier, who began collecting books in 1948. Gutter was especially interested in collecting materials pertaining to the history of Chicago, from the period of 1850-1930 also known as the "Age of Chicago". When the University of Illinois acquired the Lawrence J. Gutter Collection of Chicagoana in 1982, it consists of approximately 9,000 items including books, periodicals, maps, prints, and manuscripts.

Administrative History

Lawrence J. Gutter was a graduate of the University of Illinois at Navy Pier, who began collecting books in 1948. He became especially interested in collecting materials pertaining to the history of Chicago, from the period of 1850-1930. This period has been referred to as the "Age of Chicago," and Gutter attempted to create as complete a picture as possible of the city through his collection including commercial, architectural, literary, cultural, historical, political, and social aspects. When the University of Illinois at Chicago acquired the Lawrence J. Gutter Collection of Chicagoana in 1982, it consisted of approximately 9,000 items including books, periodicals, maps, prints, and manuscripts.

Scope and Contents

This segment of the Lawrence J. Gutter collection primarily contains autographed letters between prominent individuals, unpublished manuscripts, and records of legal proceedings of the Illinois State General Assembly, and the United States Senate. The bulk of Gutter's collection consists of rare books (including the Chicago Pre-fire Imprints) which are a separate collection and can be found by searching the UIC Library catalog.
