Biographical Sketch

Lloyd O. Lewis was a Baptist minister and professor of religion, philosophy, and public speaking at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and a civil rights activist. Lewis received his D.D. from Virginia Union University. From 1908 to 1921 he was minister at the Eighth Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. In 1921 he joined the faculty of Morehouse College, where he taught until his retirement in 1945. Lewis was an outspoken opponent of segregation and was president of the Lynchburg, Virginia, branch of the NAACP. His wife Emma Bryant Lewis, a native of Chicago, was a graduate of Spelman College. She later earned a degree in library science, working first at Morehouse College and then at Kentucky State College. She shared her husband's commitment to civil rights.
