Part of the Jane Addams Memorial Collection. Mary Fry (1877-1952) was the housekeeper and companion to Anna Hostetter Haldeman Addams, Jane Addams' stepmother. She was a friend of Marcet Haldeman-Julius, acting as her agent in the care of the Addams' Cedarville homestead and caring for her children periodically. The Collection contains photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and obituaries about the Addams and Haldeman-Julius families.

Biography of Mary Fry

Mary Fry was born July 15, 1877 to Lewis and Carrie (Duth) Fry. Mary went to live at the Addams Homestead in Cedarville, Illinois with Anna Hostetter Haldeman Addams, Jane Addams stepmother, after her mother's death sometime between July 15, 1889 and July 14, 1890. Fry attended Frances Shrimer Academy in Mt. Carroll, Illinois and the University of Chicago for three quarters. As an adult, Mary Fry was a housekeeper and companion to Anna Hostetter Haldeman Addams. Fry developed a sisterly relationship with Anna Marcet Haldeman-Julius, Jane Addams' niece. She acted as Haldeman-Julius' agent in the case of the Addams' Cedarville Homestead and cared for her children periodically. She died August 21, 1952.

Scope and Contents

Inclusive dates for this collection are 1866-1940, the bulk are between 1914 - ca. 1930. These papers are primarily composed of photographs and correspondence, as well as newspaper clippings. Correspondents include Anna Marcet Haldeman-Julius, Anna Hostetter Haldeman Addams, Mary Fry, Genevieve Fry, and John L. Fry. This collection also contains photographs of Jane Addams and her family as well as photographs of the interior of Hull-House. Paul Fry's memoir of Mary Fry, "Generous Spirit: The Life of Mary Fry," is also part of this collection.

Paul Fry donated materials for this collection in two accessions. Family and Hull-House photographs were donated in 1970. Family correspondence and newspaper clippings were donated in 1975.
