Biographical Sketch

Michael Gamboney (b. 9 May 1911) was a Chicago artist who served as a director and instructor in the Hull-House Art School. He had studied art at Hull-House at age 10 and took up etching there with Norah Hamilton, a former student of Whistler. Gamboney joined the Hull-House staff in 1929. In the 1930s, he taught an etching at Hull-House as part of the Works Progress Adult Education Program. He became director of the Hull-House Art School in 1937. Gamboney graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and studied under Russian painter Boris Anisfield and German sculptor and designer Emil Zeiter. During his tenure at Hull-House Gamboney arranged monthly art exhibits with a focus on American, especially Chicago artists. The formal receptions that opened the affairs normally hosted around 150 patrons. He retired from the Hull-House staff January 1, 1970.
