Abstract:
Mary J. Herrick (1895-1984) was a teacher in the Chicago public secondary schools from 1922 to 1965. Herrick was actively involved in the teachers' union movement. The Herrick collection is comprised entirely of printed works including books, pamphlets, and reports. These printed works are primarily concerned with adult education, patriotism, civil defense, public school education in Chicago, urban affairs, and tax reform.

Biographical Sketch

Mary J. Herrick (1895-1984) was a teacher in the Chicago public secondary schools from 1922 to 1965. Herrick was actively involved in the teachers' union movement, commencing this service with her membership in the Federation of Women High School Teachers, 1923-1937, and serving as president of this group from 1933-1936. She became chairman of the Joint Board of Teachers Unions which formed the basis of the Chicago Teachers Union founded in 1937. Herrick also served as the research director (1956-1958) and as vice president (1935-1940, 1958-1962) of the American Federation of Teachers.

She was also involved in civic and community affairs during her lifetime. She was a camp director (1926-1938) for the YWCA, director of the Italian Methodist Settlement in Chicago (1919-1922), a VISTA volunteer, a general advisor at Roosevelt University (1961), and did work for the Citizens School Committee of Chicago. Herrick was a prolific author of many printed papers and pamphlets, with her most notable work being The Chicago Public Schools: A Social and Political History published in 1971.
