Abstract:
In 1966, Lonny Myers, M.D. founded an organization called the Illinois Citizens for the Medical Control of Abortion (ICMCA). In 1975, the ICMCA changed its name to the Abortion Rights Association of Illinois, only to change the name again in 1978 to the National Abortion Rights Action League of Illinois in 1978. A change of leadership in 1976 put the organization on shaky ground, but between 1977 and 1983, NARAL of IL had a high of 200 active members and 4,000 paying members. The National Abortion Rights Action League of Illinois Records reflect the mission, association, fundraising, correspondence, information gathering and political activism of this organization. The records consist of newsletters, budgets, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, articles, oppositional materials, and media coverage of the abortion controversy.

Administrative History

In 1966, Lonny Myers, M.D. founded an organization called the Illinois Citizens for the Medical Control of Abortion (ICMCA). This coalition of doctors, activists and religious leaders began a sustained campaign to change the existing abortion laws. They believed that abortion was a decision between a woman and her doctor, and that women had a right to get safe, legal abortions. Helen Smith took over the role of director, and continued to fundraise, organize letter writing campaigns and benefits, and engaged in political correspondence with local, state and national politicians. Though the Supreme Court did legalize most abortions in 1973, ICMCA continued its political action against a variety of threatening legislation throughout the 1970s and the 1980s.
