Biographical Sketch

Born in Chicago in 1887, Rose Hass attended Vassar College and the University of Chicago, from which she graduated in 1907. In December of that same year, she married Chicago architect Alfred S. Alschuler, with whom she had 5 children. After her children had grown, she became involved in the development of early childhood education, carving out a leadership role in the development of Chicago nursery schools. She continued her professional engagement with educational issues through research and the publication of numerous articles and books on early childhood education. Alschuler died in 1979.

Under the auspices of the Chicago Women's Club, Alschuler organized and directed Chicago's first (and the nation's second) nursery school in the Franklin Public School. Her leadership reputation quickly grew, leading the Winnetka Public School in 1927 and the tenants of the Garden Apartments in 1928 to seek Alschuler's help in establishing and operating nursery schools at their respective sites. From 1932-1940 Alschuler served as the staff director for the WPA Nursery School system, bringing her leadership to 18 schools across Chicago.

Her activities in nursery schools led her to author several articles and books on issues pertaining to nursery school management, planning, and pedagogy, as well as contributing to the field of educational psychology. Her articles appeared in scholarly journals as well as popular magazines, and she authored three books: Two to Six (1933), Play, the Child's Response to Life (1937), and Painting and Personality (1947), all of which drew upon her years and experiences as a nursery school administrator.

Alschuler's professional activities extended beyond Chicago's nursery schools, as she served on many boards and committees, including the National Association for Nursery Education, Progressive Education, National Commission for Young Children, and consultant to the Federal Public Housing Authority for school and playground planning. In her later years, she directed her volunteerism increasing towards matters of Jewish culture, and she spent her winters in Tempe, AZ., returning to the North Shore of the Chicago Area for the remainder of the year.

Scope and Contents

The collection covers materials collected by Alschuler throughout much of her professional life, including her work with various nursery schools, the WPA, and her research and publication work. Materials primarily include clippings, minutes, memos, notes, organizational literature, photographs, glass lantern slides, and 8mm film. The collection includes several accessions, and has been organized according to professional elements of Alschuler's life.
