Biographical Sketch

Richmond A. Jones (b. 1937) is a Chicago-based advertising art director and freelance graphic designer. Jones' education included study at The University of Illinois, American Academy of Art, The Lill Street Ceramics Studio, The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He worked in New York as an art director at Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn (September 1961-November 1966) and served from 1962-1964 in the U.S. Army in Germany before receiving an Honorable Discharge after military obligation with the rank of Sergeant. Jones then worked in New York for J. Walter Thompson Co. (1966-1968), and Fuller, Smith and Ross (1969-1970) and he was the president of Jones, James and Jameson, Inc. (1968-1969). In 1970, he established Richmond A. Jones Graphics in Chicago. Some of Jones' major clients have included the American Library Association, International Business Machines (IBM), Mosby Yearbook Medical Publishers, Miller Brewing Company, and the Illinois Central Railroad.

Jones was a founder of the Group for Advertising Progress, a director and member of the Society of Typographic Arts -- where he was one of the few African American designers, and a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (1975-2000). He has received numerous honors and awards for his work including two for Highest Readership from Design News (1966) and the Max Award for a brochure produced for Underwriters Labs Inc. (1985). Jones is listed in Who's Who Among Black Americans (1992-1993), Who's Who in the Midwest (1990-1991), received the American Corporate Identity Award of Excellence in 1997 and has been noted as a Black advertising pioneer in Toyota Corporation's 2005 FORWARD publication.


Scope and Contents

The collection consists of preliminary work and final project designs done by Jones. The designs are arranged alphabetically by the client's name. Dates are for the works included. In cases of undated work, dates have been supplied by Jones. Books with his cover designs are located at the end of the collection and are listed alphabetically by the author's last name. Folder #115, Box 11 contains a list of Jones' design work and production dates. This list is a useful reference for the designs.
