Biographical Sketch

Sophie Trifshik Goren was born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago. From 1928 until 1938, beginning while she was in high school, Goren worked as a volunteer at the Hull-House Settlement House teaching handcrafts, English, citizenship, and conducting tours of the thirteen Hull-House buildings. Goren was personally acquainted with the legendary settlement house's founder, Jane Addams, until Addams' death in 1936. During this time, Goren also volunteered for two years at the University of Chicago Settlement House. Goren married Morris L. Goren, M.D. in 1938 and moved to Beverly Hill, California. Hull-House made a tremendous impact on her young life and despite her marriage and the move to California, Goren remained in contact with residents of Hull-House until its closing in 1963. She spend six decades collecting memorabilia, correspondence, photographs, and new clippings pertaining to Jane Addams and Hull House.


Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the items Goren collected over the years. The focal point of the collection is a scrapbook created by Goren for presentations and exhibits she occasionally gave area schools and events to educate people about the work of Jane Addams and Hull-House. The collection is divided into five series: Scrapbook, Exhibit Collage, Correspondence, Program Notes and Research Material, and Memorabilia. The collection contains of newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, Hull House newsletters brochures and pamphlets, and brochures and invitations to events and celebrations in honor of Jane Addams.
