Biographical Sketch

Ute Jensen is an accomplished award winning graphic artist. She was born in Westphalia, Germany; she graduated from Folkwang Schule fur Gestaltung in Essen, Germany, the design school of the world-renowned Bauhaus Institute. In the early 1960's Jansen immigrated to the United States, where her career as a graphic designer began in the academic press community. She worked for the University of Illinois Press in Champaign, Indiana University Publications in Bloomington, and the University of Chicago Press in Chicago creating posters, book jackets and publications. In the 1970's Jansen ventured into commercial art and advertisement by opening and independent design studio where she worked on advertising projects for Texaco and Gulf Oil. It was during this period where she developed her niche in Magazine design. Jansen worked for the women's food, fashion and craft magazine Sphere, and the travel magazine Odyssey; Jansen spent nearly twenty (20) years as the Design Director for Ebony Magazine. She has written articles and lectured across the United States. She has received numerous awards for her design expertise from the American Institute of Graphic Arts in New York, the Society of Typographic Arts in Chicago and from the Chicago Women in Publishing.
