Administrative History

The World's Columbian Exposition was held from May to October 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. Meant to honor both the 400 year anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the new world and the rising power and prosperity of the United States, the U.S. Congress designated Chicago as the official site for the fair after local businessmen raised $5 million dollars and lobbied intensively against competing cities such as New York, St. Louis, and Philadelphia. Over 27 million visitors from around the world attended the Exposition and its international exhibits showcasing achievements in the industry, agriculture, science, and the arts.
