Part I: The University of Illinois and the growth
of a Medical Center 1858 to 1946)
What is now the University of Illinois at Chicago began in the 19th Century
as several private institutions focusing on the health sciences. During
the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these institutions eventually
became part of the University of Illinois and were later joined together
under the administrative framework of the University of Illinois Chicago
Professional Colleges. |

Chicago Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary was established
(later becoming the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary)

Chicago College of Pharmacy was established |

1867
|
The University of Illinois was chartered as the Illinois Industrial University and later opened in 1868. This campus, located at Urbana-Champaign, was one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created within 10 years of the signing of the Morrill Act by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. |

College of Physicians and Surgeons was established |

Columbian Dental College was established |

1896
|
The Chicago College of Pharmacy was acquired by the University
of Illinois and became the first academic unit for the University of Illinois
in Chicago |

The College of Physicians and Surgeons affiliated with the
University of Illinois |

The Columbian Dental College became part of the University
of Illinois, later becoming the College of Dentistry |

1913
|
The College of Physicians and Surgeons was fully incorporated
into the University of Illinois and became the College of Medicine |
1916 |
The University of Illinois Board of Trustees authorizes Graduate Courses in Medical Sciences |

The General Hospital of the recently established Research
and Education Hospital opened |

1943
|
The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary became part of the University
of Illinois |

The Chicago units of the University of Illinois were brought
together into the Chicago Professional Colleges |
Part II: Two Campuses in Chicago (1946 to 1982)
Following the end of the Second World War, a second University of Illinois
campus was established in Chicago. The second campus began as a two year
program at Navy Pier and then later expanded into a full fledged university
at Harrison and Halsted. Until 1982, this second campus was independent
of the University of Illinois programs that were already established at
the Medical Center. |

A two year undergraduate program known as the University
of Illinois Chicago Undergraduate Division was established at Navy Pier.
Associate Deans were appointed for Engineering; Commerce and Business
Administration; and Liberal Arts and Sciences |
1957 |
The University Statutes were revised to include a Senate at Urbana-Champaign, the Chicago Professional Colleges, and the Chicago Undergraduate Division. Prior to 1957, there was one Senate for the entire University of Illinois System. |

The School of Nursing was established by the Board of Trustees,
later becoming a college in 1959 |

The Chicago Professional Colleges was redesignated the University
of Illinois at the Medical Center |

1964
|
The cornerstone was laid for the four-year University of
Illinois at Chicago Circle, located at Harrison and Halsted. The Colleges
of Architecture and Art, Business Administration, Engineering, and Liberal
Arts and Sciences were established along with the Divisions of Education
and Physical Education |

Classes began at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle |

A Graduate College for the Chicago Circle Campus was established by the Board of Trustees |

The School of Public Health was established by the Board of Trustees |

The College of Associated Health Sciences was officially
established, although the program had been a school in the College of
Medicine since 1963 |

1980
|
The University of Illinois Hospital opened, replacing the
Research and Education Hospital |
