Local Adaptations of DLC/NLM MARC Records for Books

UIC library follows OCLC Input Standards level I. Consult that document as needed.

In choosing records for use in our local database, prefer the following order:

DLC |c DLC (or equivalent)
NLM |c NLM (or equivalent)

Field 006

Supply, when applicable.

Field 010

Do not change based on card number given in book; number appearing in the
publication may be added in |z.

Field 020

Supply any applicable to the title. Field is repeatable.

Field 041

Supply, if applicable but missing.

Field 043

Supply, if applicable but missing.

Field 049

Supply |m no

Field 050

For analytics, volume is v. not vol.  It is not necessary to move a call
number to the 090 when the only change is from vol. to v.

Books with LAW in the 050 should go to Ken Carlborg.

Field 240

First indicator 1.
Supply correct subfield codes.

Field 245

Supply correct filing indicator.

Field 246

Delete initial articles in titles.
 
Field 260

The latest publication date of a multivolume work should be an integral
part of the descriptive cataloging, being transcribed in angle brackets in
260 |c.
 
Field 263

Delete.
 
Field 4xx

Series are traced regardless of LC's decision.

Watch for 4xx also traced in an 8xx. Change to 490 1.
 
Field 440
 
Supply filing indicators if missing.
 
Field 490 1

When identical to 830 except for the initial article retag 490 1 to 440
and delete 830.

Delete initial articles in |t of 6xx

Correct obviously outdated headings: e.g. Negroes to Afro-Americans or
Blacks; Soviet Union to appropriate heading.

|x, |y, |z Correct obviously outdated subdivisions: e.g. Address, essays,
lectures.

Correct |x to |v for form subdivisions.

Delete |f for author/title subject added entries.

Field 7xx
 
Delete initial articles in |t of 7xx.

Accept collective uniform titles in 7xx.

Trace analytic entries in original language.

Delete |f for simple author/title added entries.

Accept |f for analytic author/title added entries.
