Cataloging with NLM Copy
Verification Outline:
Search OCLC for title you have in hand. Ascertain that the cataloging copy matches the edition of the work in hand by comparing the following:March field Indicators Sub-field Codes Author or editors 100 x x #a Title Proper 245 x x #a Sub title 245 #b Statement of responsi- 245 #c bility Edition statement 250 Imprint 260 Place of publ (distrib) #a Publisher (distributor) #b Date of publication #c Collation 300 Paging #a Illustrations #c Size #c Accompanying materials #e Series statement 400 x x (440, 490, 8XX, etc.) Notes 500 Subjects 600 x x (610, 611, etc.) Added entries 700 x x (710,711, etc.)If the work and the copy in hand match, make sure all tags, codes and indicators in fixed and variable fields are present and correctly coded.
The call number (classification number) in the NLM copy (060 field) should be checked against those already used in our unionized catalog. If no conflict is found, use the call number assigned by NLM. Also, call numbers assigned by NLM should be changed to conform to our policies. All classification numbers should be checked in the latest schedule (National Library of Medicine Classification) and all cutter numbers should be checked in the Cutter (Sanborn) table. After making all necessary changes in the OCLC record, check the 1XX, 4XX and 7XX for authority verification. Export record to the UIC catalog and add call number, library locations and mhold information as needed. Once all databases have been updated, write the call number on the title page of the book, remove dust jacket, except for Special Collections and record statistics on appropriate form. Create item record and set the item status to "In Transit." Place all flags inside the book and put the completed books on the ready truck located by LCIII workstation.
