Title Page Markings

Hook the first letter of the main entry, e.g. ( L )

If the main entry is not on the title page pencil in and hook the first letter.

Write the call number in the upper left-hand quadrant of the title page. Drop each element of the call number onto a new line, i.e.

Classification letter(s)
Classification number
[classification number with decimal point]
[special topic number, geographic etc.]
Cutter number and work mark
Publication date (copyright date)
[volume number, edition number, no., etc.]
Copy number

If a title page is so profusely decorated or is a color such that information cannot be read, the call number may be written on a label then affixed to the title page.

To minimize binding problems, write the call number one inch from top of the title page, no less than one inch from the spine.

For sound recordings, CD's and videocassettes do not mark the main entry but make a call number label for the physical piece.
