Protocols and Process for Adding or Altering Pages in the Library's Web Space
|
- Department staff member creates or does major overhaul of a web page; the department head and/or cross-departmental committee responsible for the page must then review and approve the content.
- After following procedures for checking/verifying page HTML syntax and links contained in the Guidelines for the University Library Web Pages, Technical appendix, the staff member uploads the web page to the web server using an FTP client such as WS-FTP for Windows or Fetch for Macintosh (supplied with the appropriate Network Services Kit) to
- server: tigger.cc.uic.edu
- directory:
/usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/depts/lib/yourdirectory/subdirectory/
(see the Directory Structure page for a list of directories) and upload your file.
- Staff member sends a simultaneous email to their department head, to lib-sys@uic.edu asking for a technical review of the page, and to erq@uic.edu, letting ERQ know that the page exists, and that it must be reviewed by ERQ to make certain that it is in concert with the library's protocols. You must state exactly where the file has been placed and what its current URL is.
- Do not create any links from other current web pages to the new page at this time; the page MUST be offically approved by ERQ first.
- lib-sys@uic.edu reviews page for conformance to guidelines, mark-up errors, sizing of images, etc. At this time, if significant corrections are needed, you may NOT create links from any other current web pages
- No links to UIC personal directories will be allowed from any page on the Library's web site. No page will be approved with any such links. Staff will be asked to remove links to UIC personal directories on existing pages if any are found; if the department responsible for the page containing the link does not remove it within a reasonable time, ERQ may remove the link.
- After any corrections are made, lib-sys@uic.edu notifies erq@uic.edu that a page has passed technical review. ERQ will then review the page within ten days. A note will be sent to the staff member and department head indicating approval or the need for changes. Once approved by ERQ, links to the page may be created.
- Staff member maintains page within established guidelines.
- NOTE: If significant content changes are made to a page, the changed page must be resubmitted to ERQ. Again, this process should take no more than ten working days.
PLEASE NOTE: The Electronic Resources Quadrant, in accordance with these protocols and as the body within the Library responsible for the library's web space, reserves the right to recommend or make substantial alterations to any page within the library's web space.
