Directory Structure

This part of the document tells you where and how to upload your files. Please read the ENTIRE page before uploading!

The following are directories underneath /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/depts/lib/ where library staff may upload their pages.

NOTE:
EVERY DIRECTORY and EVERY SUBDIRECTORY MUST HAVE AN index.shtml file.

An index.shtml file keeps users from seeing all the files in your directory, which might otherwise lead to security problems and other issues.

Various individuals

Contains special projects with which library staff have been involved. This directory is a specific exception to the Library Style Guide; aside from the top level index to the directory, no pages contained within need conform to library style guidelines.

libe

projects/resources/ilw/

Library Systems, Joan Fiscella

Contains the Illinois Learning Web. As with other "projects" directories, this is a specific exception to the Library Style Guide; no pages contained within the ILW directory need conform to library style guidelines. For some unknown reason, the group privileges on this directory have been assigned differently, probably because it was one of the library's earliest special web projects. The project appears currently to be in abeyance.

Subdirectories

Each department's main directory contains the following subdirectories:

  • archive
Older, dated information kept for archival purposes. All outdated web pages should be placed into this directory. Please take care to rename the pages before placing them in this directory so that you do not overwrite previous versions. One suggestion for new page names: webpage.shtml could be renamed to webpage20010101.shtml, incorporating the date that the page was replaced. The archive subdirectory will not be searched by the library's search engine.
  • resources
Electronic resources, information about the library's books and other materials - links to internal and external sites, electronic journals, databases, etc. Indexed and searched by the library's search engine. Departments may create subdirectories within resources as needed.
  • services
Services offered by the library, departments and sites - web pages explaining and detailing the services offered by your department. Indexed and searched by the library's search engine. Departments may create subdirectories within services as needed.
  • temp
Temporary directory, files used for instruction for a single course or seminar, similar purposes; web pages may be placed in this directory for no more than a single term. If they are to be used for more than one term, they must be submitted to WOC for formal approval. The temp subdirectory is blocked from the web site's Google search feature, and so patrons cannot locate any pages within the temp directory using the Search feature. Any pages currently residing in that directory as of that time must either be submitted to WOC for approval or they will be lost to the users.
  • webalizer
Statistics directory; this breaks out at a departmental level the statistical use information for the library's website.

Staff and departments are allowed to create their own subdirectories within the /resources and /services directories, but not in any others. If needed, subdirectories for departments' images may be created in the images directory.

The ONLY page allowed in the top level of your directory is an index.shtml file. For example, the directory structure for the /systems directory will be roughly as follows (NOTE: this is only an example; substitute the name of your department/unit site's directory for the word "systems" as appropriate to understand what you need to do.):

  • /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/depts/lib/
    • /systems/ - the directory in which public files relating to the Systems section are placed
      • index.shtml (file - describes the contents of all of the /systems/ subdirectories generally; the index.shtml file for EACH subdirectory--excluding the archive subdirectory--MUST be linked to this file. This is the ONLY independent file allowed in the Systems top level directory.)
      • /archive (directory)
        • index.shtml (file - this one describes the contents of the /systems/archive/ subdirectory specifically; the archive index file ALONE need not be linked to the /systems/index.shtml file; you may if you so desire, but it is not required.)
        • Outdated files which it may be necessary to keep for some reason. All files in this directory MUST be linked to the /systems/archive/index.shtml file.
      • /resources (directory)
        • index.shtml (file - describes the contents of the /systems/resources subdirectory specifically)
        • Other files as needed; All files in this directory should be linked to /systems/resources/index.shtml
        • Subdirectories for specific systems resources, if needed; each subdirectory would ALSO needs its own index.shtml file. All subdirectory index.shtml files should be linked to /systems/resources/index.shtml
      • /services (directory)
        • index.shtml (file - describes the contents of the /systems/services/ subdirectory specifically)
        • Other files as needed. All files in this directory should be linked to /systems/services/index.shtml
        • Subdirectories for specific services, if needed; each subdirectory would ALSO needs its own index.shtml file. All subdirectory index.shtml files should be linked to /systems/services/index.shtml
      • /temp
(temporary files only; any file in the TEMP directory more than one term must be either submitted for review or deleted. Files left in the TEMP directory more than one term, if no other provision has been made, may be deleted automatically by the system. )
        • index.shtml - (file describing the content of the TEMP subdirectory. This file MUST be linked to /systems/index.shtml.)
        • Other files as needed. All files in this directory MUST be linked to /systems/temp/index.shtml.
      • /webalizer (directory)
        • Library staff are not allowed to edit, add or delete any file in the webalizer directory. The webalizer directory is not allowed to be linked to any other page in the department's directory.

ALL files placed into your department/unit site's Web space MUST be placed into one of the four non-Webalizer subdirectories.
