Department Web Page ImagesStoring Image FilesIn general, departments should put images intended for their web space in images directories within their directories. For example, the directory for images for the Library Systems group might be To link to the images you use, the code would be something like <img src="/depts/lib/yourdirectoryname/images/yourfilename"> NOTE: Under the previous set of web page rules, images were placed into a central images directory, with department-specific subdirectories. For example, the directory for any images placed by Systems was /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/depts/lib/images/systems/. If you prefer, this option is still available; additionally, any graphics created under those rules are still available in those directories for your use. If you prefer to use this method, Library Systems must create the images directory for you. In that case, please let Systems know that you need a directory by sending email to lib-sys@uic.edu, and Library Systems will create one for you. Image File FormatAll images should be either GIF or JPG/JPEG format; these are the only image formats easily viewable by browsers. If you are uncertain which format to use, please consult the electronic services librarians in the Infotech Arcades and they will help you. <alt> Tags for ImagesAll images used in the Library's public pages MUST contain valid ALT tags for accessibility purposes. An ALT tag provides a concise description of the image for non-visual users. Ideally, images should use valid TITLE tags as well. TITLE tags appear when a user hovers the mouse over the image. More information on how to tag images is available in Text Equivalent Markup Techniques from the Illinois Center for Instructional Technology Accessibility. < Back to the Style Guide Index Last updated: Monday, 14-Aug-2006 14:09:49 CDT
