The University of Manitoba honored war veterans on Canadian Remembrance
Day with the unveiling of "Lest We Forget," an immense Web-based
exploration of the Canadian wartime experience. The online documentary
connects users to more than 10,000 scans of archived materials, including
both textual sources and photographs, related to Canada during times
of conflict. Archives & Special Collections worked for nearly two
years on the development of this collection that will serve as a rich

The imperative for taxpayer access to scientific research will be discussed
in a panel session on the breakthrough National Institutes of Health
(NIH) plan to provide open public access to peer-reviewed articles on
NIH-funded research. A panel of three speakers brings the perspectives
of those in labs, libraries, and homes. They will examine the economic,
social, and scientific motivations that led NIH to propose toll-free
access to results of federally funded biomedical research via the National
Library of Medicine's online resource, PubMed Central (PMC).
Moderated by Columbia University Librarian James Neal, the panel will
include:
- Jane Griffith, Assistant Director for Policy and Legislative Development,
National Library of Medicine: Ms. Griffith will outline NIH's objectives
in developing their enhanced public access plan and describe how the
agency has taken account of the various stakeholder concerns.
- Gary Ward, Associate Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics,
University of Vermont: Dr. Ward will address the benefits to scientists
and scientific advancement of more open sharing of research literature.
- Sharon Terry, President and CEO, Genetic Alliance: Ms. Terry, a leading
voice in the Alliance for Taxpayer Access, will describe how the current
system fails patients and offer thoughts on the promise of the NIH plan.

MINUTES

ERQ, 11/10/04
Electronic
Resources Quad
Agenda/Minutes -- Wednesday, 11/10/04
2pm-3:30pm
phone - Pifalo to call Daley B-466 and Lisa Wallis (if available)
Lisa (phone), John (recorder), Victoria (convener; phone), Julie, Ellen,
Annie, Anne (not there)
Minutes
| |
Approval done,
after some discussion of when the last minutes were approved.
Taker - Shuler |
|
There was a brief discussion of future
teleconferencing possibilities for group. In Quicklinks, items listed
alphabetically, which places the disabilities link in the middle of
the list.
Web Site Accessibility
| |
The group
thinks the web pages are as accessible as they can be. The issues
raised as short-term matters are done, based on the Oct. 22, 2004,
recommendations. Longer term issues involve the A-Z lists, web forms,
and upper level circulation pages. Still a question about what needs
to be done with the web forms. Of check boxes and radio buttons.
|
Web Pages
| |
E-Resources - announcement/comment
period |
|
| |
Announcement about
the changes still has to be sent out, responses will come in between
now and early December. |
| |
Problems with new installation
of CLIO? Discussions ongoing. Give a status report on ILL web pages
of which sites are available through CLIO? Some problems using MyILL
with CLIO? Some discussion on the content of ILL web pages, is it
really clear to the users? Some questions about how MyILL works.
Is this an improvement over the previous ILL pages and their multiplicity?
Do we agree with all the changes, and tell the ILL group the pages
are ready to go. Ann and Ellen will work with ILL folks. Still some
of the lower level pages still need to be changed. ERQ approves
with the provision that the changes be made. Central web pages for
circulation services need to be reviewed and approved. |
| |
Alpha E-Resources and
RefWorks - suggestion from Costa |
| |
Still waiting on these
changes. Where are we going to place the icon? Where we know there
is automatic export, essential for RefWorks. |
| |
Other Catalogs - suggestion
from Shaevel |
| |
Arrange the other catalogs
alphabetically. Put library to library loan agreements link in the
top text on page. Create another geographic level for the VEL? The
group thinks not. |
| |
CRL - observation from
Hepburn |
| |
Put it into the QuickLinks?
The group thinks not. Put the CRL into quicSearch? The group supports
this. How about putting another geographic box in the table for
CRL and VEL? If we want to really highlight the services of CRL
and VEL. Ellen will make some dummy pages. |
| |
Tied in with the ILL
pages and CIRCWork revisions. |
Guidelines/Style Review
| |
Some work done. Ellen
will send out for group to review |
