ANNOUNCEMENTS

Library Computer Use Policy
The Steering Committee has approved a Computer Use Policy as proposed by the Public Services Council.  The new policy is in response to user complaints about inappropriate use of library computers and the lack of availability of computers in our libraries.  The Computer Use Policy will become a part of the Library Use and Conduct Policy Statement.

The policy will be posted at library entrances.  In addition, signs will be placed near public access computer stations, and elsewhere if desired, at the discretion of individual departments. The intention of this policy is to offer our users a computing environment supportive of study, learning, and research.  Your help in enforcing this policy ensures that our users have ready access to library resources.

Discussion of the policy will take place at a future All Staff Meeting. Questions about the policy should be sent to Public Services
Council members:  Jo Dorsch, Francis Kayiwa, Carol Scherrer, John Shuler, Firouzeh (Fifi) Logan, and Ann Weller.

Web page version of computer use policy:
The Library provides computers to access library collections and other educational and research resources.  Users are expected to use computing resources in a manner consistent with the instructional, research, and administrative goals of the University.  Academic work always has priority over other uses. The public is allowed to use library computers in compliance with policy, but priority is given to UIC students, faculty and staff.  The use of library computers is expected to be in compliance with University policies and state and federal laws.

OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION NEWS

Mark Your Calendar!
Illinois Library Day
Wednesday, March 1, 2006
Each spring, librarians, trustees, and library volunteers gather in Springfield to advocate for libraries throughout our state, it is an opportunity for librarians to bring attention to the value of each Illinois library to their respective community, whether that community is a college campus, a school district, a city, or a specialized setting such as a hospital.

Plans call for participants to gather at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and march en masse to the Lincoln statue on the east side of the state capitol building for a rally featuring speeches from library leaders. Participants will lobby their individual state senators and representatives before and after the rally. Organizers are hoping for a turnout of at least five hundred members of the library community.

National Library Legislative Day
Tuesday, May 2, 2006
Holiday Inn on the Hill
415 New Jersey Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20001
Registration form will appear in the February 2006 ILA Reporter.

In 2007 Congress will have to consider current budget deficits and other budget expenditures when they fund library programs. Congress will also have to make decisions about telecommunications, copyright, and privacy legislation. It is once again extremely important for library activists take the opportunity to make sure their voices are heard and to advocate for increased library funding.
