OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION NEWS

NEW ONLINE MAGAZINE FOR TEACHERS OF INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS
S.O.S for Information Literacy announces the premier issue of Educators' Spotlight Digest, the first multimedia, online magazine dedicated to providing information and ideas to teachers of information literacy skills.

Contents of the inaugural issue include:

• a feature story on how kids are using the Web;
• news about relevant information literacy projects and activities;
• tips on how to address copyright issues;
• successful motivational teaching strategies submitted by library media specialists;
• valuable resources available through AASL;
• an article by a guest contributor on transforming research on student motivation into effective teaching strategies;
• amusing and poignant teaching anecdotes by a veteran classroom teacher; and
•archived issues of the publication in its previous format

Educators' Spotlight Digest is edited by Marilyn Arnone, research associate professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University. Ruth V. Small, professor and director of Syracuse University's Center for Digital Literacy, is associate editor. Educators' Spotlight Digest, published three times per year, is a free, online publication of S.O.S. for Information Literacy, a project of Syracuse University's Center for Digital Literacy, in collaboration with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

S.O.S. for Information Literacy is a dynamic web-based multimedia resource for educators, currently in development, that promises to make a significant contribution to enhancing the teaching of information literacy skills to children. At no time in history has the ability to locate, organize, evaluate, manage and use information been more critical for today's learners. These skills, collectively referred to as information literacy, lay the groundwork for success in every phase of a student's life both in and out of school.

The "SOS" in the title of the project means more than a call to action to enhance information literacy instruction. It stands for Situation (e.g., grade level, curricula area), Outcome (e.g., information skill(s) to be learned), and Strategies (e.g., teaching ideas or specific techniques and strategies to achieve a desired outcome). The educator can input the situation and desired outcomes, and the information system will suggest possible motivational teaching strategies when a strategy search is used.

MINUTES

• ILL Works Meeting, Jan. 04, 2006

ILLWrks Meeting
Jan. 04, 2006, 11:00 a.m.
Daley 1-360

Participating: John Matthews (Daley); Kevin O'Brien (LHS Chicago); Barb Reding (LHS Rockford); Chris Wadle (LHS Peoria)

Agenda

1) Approval of minutes from last meeting: Barb will get minutes of November 02 meeting out by the end of the week.

2) Minolta scanners/LHSC and Daley: LHS Chicago has stopped using its Minolta PS3000 scanner due to poor quality of images. Articles are currently being scanned and sent via Ariel using a flat bed scanner shared with circulation staff.

3) SharpDesk software/potential for use in Daley/LHS C ILL: SharpDesk will be installed on several PCs at LHS Chicago on Jan. 10. This will permit staff to create TIFF or PDF files directly from the Sharp photocopiers/scanners and send them to a PC for delivery via Ariel. SharpDesk has been in use at Daley Reserves for some time now. Kevin will ask for feedback on the quality of the images from the sites after the software is installed.

3) Revising ILL request forms: I-Share/Title/Auth field length in MyILL@UIC forms/Requiring UIC addresses: John reports that some patrons have complained about the limited number of characters permitted in the fields of the MyILL request forms. ILL Wrks will ask that the character limit for the fields be increased. Also, the ILL web pages will need to be updated to reflect the new names I-Share and CARLI. John will communicate with Ellen and Systems to request the changes.

4) Review of pricing categories for Document Delivery services: the Access Services Council has requested that ILL Wrks make a review of the pricing categories for UIC's document delivery services. Kevin is working on this and will request the pertinent information from the sites.

6) Other issues: John has reported the Clio script error message appearing in Clio and ClioRequest since the recent Voyager upgrade. Ling Wang has responded and will report back. John is experimenting with Judd Knight's Clio utility software and will report back. The LHS sites have all upgraded to Clio 5.2.1 and have not experienced any problems with the new version.

Next meeting was provisionally set for 11:00 a.m. on Wed, March 1, 2006 following the Steering Committee meeting.
