Winners of the NCLIS Health Award
The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) recently announced that the University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria, TAP Information Services, Alliance Library System, and the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center, are the Illinois winners of the NCLIS 2006 Health Award. NCLIS offers one award for each state. Ten of the state winners will be selected as semi-finalists. The awards, to be presented in May 2006 at the National Library of Medicine, are designed to mobilize the resources of libraries to help citizens learn how to live healthy lifestyles and to provide citizens with consumer health information.
"Project HEALTHY: Hearing Electronically about Living the Healthy Years" was the winning Illinois state project. Project HEALTHY was coordinated by Peg Burnette, Systems/Reference LOA at LHS-Peoria, and Tom Peters, CEO of TAP Information Services. Lori Bell, former Director of the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center, was the Principal Investigator. Project HEALTHY brought web-based seminars on topics of consumer health to seniors via the Internet. The sessions were also recorded, archived, and podcast for those who could not attend the live program.
National Library Worker Day
National Library Worker Day is Tuesday April 4th. Let's celebrate the wonderful work of library employees on that day because, after all, Libraries Work Because We Do. Tell everyone what makes a library employee special in your library by submitting your favorite worker to the NLWD Stars Web site.
NLWD Stars will be featured on the National Library Workers Day site from March until the end of June. Stars will also be honored at the ALA Annual Conference. Download the free NLWD poster, which tells your patrons, trustees, and colleagues how to submit a star. Self-nominations are accepted. The deadline for submission is April 4th.
There is still time to order NLWD buttons that proclaim "Libraries Work Because We Do." Visit the web site or contact ALA-APA for information.
Tax Forms
Federal forms and instructions are available at the IRS Web site. For State taxes click on the Illinois link that will take you to the State web page.
If you prefer to photocopy the federal forms, go to the Daley Library Reference Desk, second floor and ask for Reproducable Federal Tax Forms and Instructions, Volumes 1 and 2. Infant Care at UIC: We Need Your Help
UIC is conducting an assessment to determine the need faculty, staff, and students have for infant and toddler care services on campus. The assessment is being conducted by Bright Horizons, Inc. and is sponsored by Student Affairs, Women in Science and Engineering System Transformation (WISEST), and the Deans.
You are invited and encouraged to complete the survey, regardless of whether or not you have children. In addition to assessing the feasibility of offering infant and toddler care on campus, the survey will provide vital information about the impact child care issues have on UIC faculty, staff, and students.
The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete for those with no young children and 20-25 minutes for parents with young children. The survey is completely anonymous; no names or individual identifiers are associated with the responses. There is no tracking of individual respondents and only group data will be reported. Respondents are encouraged to be as open as possible.
Please participate by accessing the survey. Thank you in advance for providing this important information.
