ANNOUNCEMENTS

Digital Humanities Scholar to be Nakata Lecturer
The UIC Library’s 2006 Nakata Lecture features John Unsworth, GSLIS dean at UIUC and expert on cyberspace policy and digital humanities. The lecture is being co-sponsored by the LAS, the A&A and the Graduate College.

Unsworth co-founded Postmodern Culture, the first peer-reviewed electronic journal in the humanities, in 1990. In 2000, he established the Text Encoding Initiative Consortium. He was the first director of the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia, and is currently chair of the American Council of Learned Societies’ Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Unsworth received the 2005 Richard W. Lyman Award from the National Humanities Center in a ceremony at the Newberry Library last spring. The Lyman Award recognizes scholars who have advanced humanistic scholarship and teaching through the innovative use of information technology.

Unsworth has conducted research projects and publishes widely on the topic of electronic scholarship.

The lecture takes place on Friday, April 28, 2006, at 2 p.m., in 713 SCE. A reception will follow the presentation.

Bring Your Daughter to Work Day
Daughters at Work:
Thursday, April 27, 2006
Illinois Room A, Student Center East
750 S. Halsted

Prior approval needed from supervisor and/or department head. Employees are allowed university time from 8:30 a.m. - Noon. Vacation time must be used if employee wants to take the rest of the day. Library staff are allowed to participate in the UIC Chancellors endorsed program with daughters only (no other relations, neighbors, friends, etc)

During the afternoon, Library employees may bring their daughters to their units to meet colleagues and see where their parents work. We would suggest limiting the visit to an hour or so. As in the past, employees may opt to take the afternoon as personal time to be with their children. As always, please double-check with your supervisor and department head to make sure there is adequate coverage.
