MILESTONE IN PERIODICALS CATALOGING
The project to catalog and classify
all periodicals in the Daley Library began with a policy change in
1982, but didn't pick up steam until it became a priority in 2001. Last
week, the number of shelved-by-title periodicals in Daley fell to under
1,000. One year from now, we expect to have none.
Nearly every title
in LC classes G-Z has been processed. Users now find periodicals
grouped by subject in geography, anthropology, the social sciences,
political science, law, education, music, fine arts, language and
literature, science and mathematics, engineering, bibliography, and
library science. Work has just begun on history. Philosophy, religion,
and general periodicals will follow.
The project also has allowed us to send
tens of thousands of volumes to the Warehouse, leaving room for new
receipts without displacing users.
Many people and several departments have
contributed to processing about 3,000 titles over the last 4.5 years. Bob
Malinowsky from Collections Development, Genelle
Meland and Luz
Vazquez from Circulation, Asha Limaye and Tom
Ward from Cataloging, and Regina Thompson
and Evette Smith from Acquisitions deserve special
praise.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Purdue University
Eight representatives from the ARL Initiative to Recruit a Diverse
Workforce visited Purdue on April 10 -12, 2005, to become acquainted firsthand with the workings
of a library at a major research university. The Purdue Libraries program was made possible by James L. Mullins, Dean of Libraries, who
explained, "We saw this as an opportunity to promote the strategic
plans of both the Purdue Libraries and the university to advance
diversity among the faculty on campus. The visit also supported the ARL
diversity program. The idea was to bring in very qualified
professionals from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in
the library profession and expose them to the workings of a major
academic research library."

Public Services Advisory Council (PSAC) Minutes, 04/26/05
Minutes of the Public Services
Advisory Council (PSAC) April 26, 2005, Daley
1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
Present: Dorsch (chair), Logan, Scherrer
(minutes), Weller
Absent: Shuler
- Minutes of the last meeting should
replace Pifalo's name with that of Dorsch in the sentence listing those
present.
2. Announcements :
- Sandra De Groote was asked to serve on the "Ask Illinois"
Committee, a state-wide collaborative reference pilot project. This
raises the question of how UIC will proceed with QP - do we go
state-wide. De Groote will bring issues and recommendations to the
council.
- The council received a request from Steve Brantley to meet
with him to discuss open source software. Since it was not clear what
issues he wished to discuss, Logan will pursue the matter with Brantley
for more information.
3. Overlapping functions of the Councils:
- Webpages: It was proposed that the
council request the webmaster, Wendall Sullivan to be the systems
person to join PSAC. PSAC would assume ownership of the public service
pages; the other councils would assume oversight of their materials in
consultation with the webmaster.
4. Charges for task forces:
- Ask a Librarian: The QP administrative
team will be invited to PSAC to discuss matters related to their charge
in May.
- My Library Portal: My library Portal will
be invited to the June meeting.
- Space planning: Logan and Scherrer will
contact Jay Lambrecht to discuss administration's thoughts on this
concept and its place in the library's planning and priorities.
5. Immediate Goals/Priorities: Dorsch will
develop a running list of issues for the council to address.
Agenda numbers 6 & 7 were postponed for
future meetings due to lack of time.
Next meetings: May 10, 2005 @ 1 p.m. - 2:30
p.m.
May 31, 2005
June 21, 2005

Dorsch proposed thereafter the council
meets the first and third Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
