Committee Election
Emily Guss, Access & Technical Services Librarian, LHS, has been elected to the Illinois Library Association Board of Directors.
New Hire
Eric Nygren has acceptecd a 50% appointment as Visiting Assistant Information Services Librarian & Visiting Assistant Professor, effective May 16, 2006.
Special Recognition
Mary Shultz, Assistant Health Sciences Librarian (Urbana) is the recipient of the Special Tribute from the Class of 2006, College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign. She received a plaque commemorating this honor at the College of Medicine Commencement on Sunday, May 7. Each year the graduating class selects an individual to recognize for exemplary contributions to their studies during medical school. It was noted in the profile about Mary in the Commencement Program that "People don't realize that medical reference librarians are one of the absolute best resources that we have in medicine today. Mary is the best example of that."
Guest Columnist
Lynn C. Westney, Associate Professor and Assistant Reference Librarian is the invited guest columnist for the quarterly column Community Building in the Spring 2006 issue of Reference and User Services Quarterly, vol. 45:3, p. 200-203. "Conspicuous by Their Absence: Academic Librarians in the Engaged University," is the title and UIC's Oak Park Project is cited in it.

Grant Award
The University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences is pleased to announce that we have been awarded an $8.965 million contract by the National Library of Medicine to serve as the Regional Medical Library for the Greater Midwest Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.
UIC has served as the RML for the region since 1979, and we look forward to continuing to work with network members to improve access to health information for health care professionals and the general public.
Support Staff Advisory Committee
The Suport Staff Advisory Committee would like to hear your suggestions for implementing the three Support Staff Task Force recommendations (Sense of Community, Employee Recognition, and Support Staff Development) and are interested in your comments or suggestions on other issues.

Graduating Students
Students graduating in May CANNOT work beyond the beginning of Summer Session - May 29, 2006. Last day of work should be May 27.
Reminder From Library Human Resources (HR)
Please remember to terminate students who will be graduating or not returning to work this summer. If you need a termination sheet, call Library HR at 6-7353 or send an email requesting the form.
Supervisory Training Sessions
Priority will be given to support staff supervisors required to attend in the probationary period. Each session will be offered twice during the calendar year. A current schedule of sessions is available on the Library Human Resources Web site.

UIC Women's Leadership Symposium 2006
Women FIRST: Moving Forward Together
Thursday, June 1;
8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Illinois Room, Student Center East
Keynote Address: Chancellor Sylvia Manning
The symposium was originated at UIC as an effort to make leadership development more accessible to all women on campus and to address the unique issues faced by minority women. Academic professionals and support staff alike benefit from the practical information provided at the workshops. This event is open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Advanced registration is required.
The Library will fund registration for Library Support Staff who would like to attend this workshop and have the permission of their supervisor and department head. Department heads should send approved requests to the Business Office by Friday, May 26, 2006. Academic staff may use their FDAC funds to attend.

The Chicago Black Renaissance and Women's Activisim

Dr. Anne Knupfer of Purdue University, and author of the path-breaking new book, "The Chicago Black Renaissance and Women's Activism," will present her work on the Chicago Renaissance period and the central role women activists played in that multi-dimensional movement. She will be joined by Dr. Margaret Burroughs, a leading activist in the early years of the South Side Community Art Center, and author of "Life with Margaret: The Official Autobiography of Dr. Margaret L.G. Burroughs."

On July 1, 2005, ICCMP, IDAL, and ILCSO merged to become the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). 2005-2006 will be a transition year for the new organization during which an integrated CARLI website will be developed.
