ASSISTANT SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN
AND ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Richard J. Daley Library
The University of Illinois at Chicago Richard J. Daley Library invites nominations and applications for a faculty position in the Special Collections Department. The University of Illinois at Chicago is a research institution with quality standards in research and publication. The Library is well known for its outstanding faculty, its collections and staff, and its planning for the future. The Special Collections Department combines rare books and manuscript collections. The position reports to the Head of the Special Collections Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Special Collections Librarian has primary responsibility for reference services, including staffing the reference desk and answering online reference questions; participates in the special collections education program, including teaching classes, designing instruction programs, and participating in outreach initiatives, both on campus and in the city of Chicago; and serves as a liaison to targeted units on campus. The Assistant Special Collections Librarian assists with the arrangement and description of the Department's manuscript collections, and prepares finding aids and guides. Special Collections librarians are asked to take a lead role in mounting exhibits, identifying outreach opportunities, acquiring collections, and writing grants.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association; two years professional special collections experience or equivalent; experience with reference; evidence of professional involvement with special collections; training and experience in handling rare books and manuscripts; and evidence of ability to meet university standards in research, publication, and professional service commensurate with tenure requirements; the ability to communicate effectively with administrators, researchers, and scholars who use the collections, and a strong public service orientation.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the history of Chicago; knowledge of or experience with preservation programs, experience with planning and designing exhibitions, with grant writing, and with developing polices, procedures, and managing staff.
SALARY/RANK/CONTRACT: Salaries are competitive and based on education and experience; faculty appointments in the UIC Library begin at $40,000; faculty status; twelve month appointment; 24 days vacation; two weeks annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); a dental plan is available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the Illinois State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required; physical examination at University Health Service is required upon appointment.
