ANNOUNCEMENTS

Reminder: Reduced Service Schedule During December Intersession
As it did last year, the campus will operate on a reduced service schedule from December 26-December 30.  This means that the Daley Library will be closed from Dec. 24-Jan. 2 and all other UIC Libraries will be closed Dec. 24-27, 30-31, and Jan. 1-2.  On Dec. 28-29, the libraries that are open will run on reduced hours and with skeletal staff.  The hours for these locations are:

• Science Library:  noon-5 p.m.
• LHS-Chicago:  8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
• LHS-Peoria:  8 a.m.-5 p.m.
• LHS- Rockford:  9 a.m.-4 p.m.
• LHS-Urbana:  11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Dec. 28 and 29 are considered reduced service days.  They are not holidays.  Employees are asked to use accrued vacation or floating holidays to cover these two days.  Hourly (nonexempt civil service) employees not using vacation or floating holidays to cover this period may take time without pay or use accrued compensatory time.

Academic or support staff members who wish to work during the reduced service days should notify your supervisor in writing by Dec. 1, 2005, in order to provide sufficient time for making suitable arrangements.  Mary Case should be copied on this notification.

For Daley staff who wish to work on Dec. 28-29, you will need to report to LHS.  If your own work is not transportable, you will be trained prior to the intersession on tasks that you will be asked to do while there.

Online Ethics Training Program
The University of Illinois Ethics Office will administer the state's second annual online ethics training program this fall.  The training, which is required by state law, will be held for all UIC employees and graduate students from Oct. 27 to Nov. 29, 2005.

There will be no grace period, as there was last year, so it is imperative to complete your training within the time period specified.  The Ethics Office will be sending additional details about the training program, including login instructions and passwords, closer to the training time.  This will be sent to you at your official campus e-mail address.  You may also visit the University Ethics Office online for further information.

In his message to all University of Illinois staff about a month ago, President Joseph White stated:  “I expect all employees to complete their training as scheduled.  Our goal is that the University of Illinois will reach 100 percent compliance. Not only does the law require full compliance, but it's a good idea to renew, as individuals and as a community, our commitment to the highest ethical standards.”

He went on to say:  “Completing the training in the first two weeks of each block will reduce the need for reminders and individual follow up.  Ethics training is a serious matter. The law requires the University's own Ethics Office to report the names of employees who do not complete their training to the Inspector General, and ultimately to the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission. The commission may levy a fine of up to $5,000 against employees who disobey the law.  The Ethics Office also will report those who fail to do their training to the respective chancellors, provosts and vice presidents to take into account during annual evaluations and for consideration of University disciplinary action.”

I encourage you all to complete the training as soon as you can and request supervisors to make sure time is allotted for this activity.  Many thanks.

Mary

Systems Reorganization
As a result of the recent interviews for an Interim Head of Systems, Library Administration has decided not to fill the position.  We are working with Systems staff on a proposed reorganization plan, which we will announce as soon as the details are worked out.  In the meantime, please continue to send systems requests to lib-sys.

I am grateful to the candidates who clearly invested a great deal of time and thought in the process and their presentations.  We have benefited already from their insights.  Our decision was not a reflection of their skills and contributions, but a growing conviction by the Library Administration that a radical approach to how Systems is organized was needed.  Thanks to all who participated in the process.

Library Strategic Planning
The Library’s Strategic Planning process got underway last week with a retreat that included members of the Steering Committee and the Faculty Executive Committee, and representatives from the support staff.  This group will continue to work together over the next several months with the goal of developing a full draft of a strategic plan by Dec. 20, 2005.   The timeline for the planning process, the format for the plan as outlined by President White, a summary of the retreat, and documents recording the brainstorming sessions at the retreat will be available shortly on the Strategic Plan Web site. Documents will continue to be posted there as the process continues.  While I have asked Department Heads to discuss and seek broad input as we move along, I urge everyone to monitor the site and send comments me at any time.

Paralleling the Library’s process, we will be asking departments to conduct their own strategic planning over the next 6 months.  The department plans will both be shaped by and help shape the Library’s overall plan.  I urge everyone to take an active role in both of these processes.  The broad range of experience and insights across our faculty and staff are critical to our creating a brilliant future that leverages our strengths to meet the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead.
