Illinois State Library Opens
Applications for Synergy 2005
Synergy: The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative
2005 is the statewide library community's proactive movement to recruit
and nurture future Illinois library leaders. Objectives include self-assessment;
discovering and developing personal values; identifying the local, state
and global environment; fostering and expanding skills and tools for
personal, professional and positional leadership; creating a cohort
group; establishing mentoring relationships; and developing a vision
of and beyond the field of librarianship.
A description of the program and application
instructions are available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/whats_new/synergy2005_ann.html
The application deadline is Nov. 12, 2004. Librarians interested in
this program should consult their supervisors.
Book Arts Workshops
SNEAK A PEEK! Go ahead, try any of these links to see the possibilities
if you attend the Collage Book Workshop at GSLIS, University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign on Nov. 6, 2004.

http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/gslis/degrees/standingbookfull.jpeg
http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/gslis/degrees/spinetopdetail.jpeg
And, fortunately, there are still a few openings in both the Collage
Book 2004 and Suminagashi classes. Join us and create your own treasures,
perfect to give away as a holiday gift or to keep for yourself.
Audience: Open to anyone interested in the beauty of paper and books.
Suminagashi Marbling Workshop
Oct. 30th, 2004, 9 a.m. to noon
GSLIS building, room 131
$39, includes some supplies
Instructor: Melinda McIntosh
Suminagashi, pronounced sue-me-nah-gah-she, literally means "spilled
ink".
This ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks is believed
to be the oldest form of marbling, originating over 2,000 years ago.
In suminagashi marble-like designs are created by floating colored inks
on water and transferring them to absorbent paper or fabric.
Given the natural flux of water, it is impossible to fix or hold a specific
pattern; therefore, each decorative sheet is as beautiful as it is unique.
This process is not only fun, it can be addictive. In this workshop
you will be able to create decorative papers to cover boxes and books,
make greeting cards and stationary, and much more.
To register go to: http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/gslis/degrees/Suminagashi.htm
Collage Book 2004
Nov. 6, 2004, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
GSLIS building, room 131
$79, includes some supplies
Class size limited to 14.
Instructor: Bea Nettles www.beanettles.com
This sophisticated, but simple book structure gives you an opportunity
to synthesize some of the photographs, text, assorted papers and two-dimensional
items that you have accumulated this year. Five stocky pages will be
created covering them entirely with your collages.
They will then be "perfect bound" along one edge with a simple
technique using a strip of Tyvek. The resultant book is strong and opens
flat. Indentations can be made for small 3-D objects as well.

Requesting in process/ on order items
Form
was explained to Emily and its linkage to UICCAT
Suggestions for Items in Process/ on order requestwill

3.
Current priorities list Lisa OLeary, Ling Wang & Ellen
Starkman will be asked to identify projects Lisa OLeary is working
on. She does a variety of special projects, eg., (develops report of
long missing items & other requests). PDQ has traditionally recommended
priorities to help the programmer allocate her time. She needs to know
what librarys priorities are.
4. Just finished CIRCWRKS meeting. Several Circ forms are on-line. Faculty
authorization- can identify proxy borrowers. Cards sent to faculty who
in turn send to proxy. Wed like to allow on-line submission.
Ebrary demo in Chicago. Interested in it from the e-reserve potential.
During demo found a much better return on the searching for needed titles.
Want to see if there are faculty outside the library willing to test
product over the 30-day trial period.
There may be potential for filling interlibrary loan requests. There
is unlimited simultaneous access to those authorized.
5. Deletion of long-missing items.
Most items missing 6 years or more have been deleted from UICCAT
with the exception of Math items. Question on how to proceed to bring
us up to date. Daugherty thanked the regionals for their assistance.
Rockford will be able to provide additional help.
6. CDs with books At Rockford CDs accompanying books are being
integrated in the stacks. The same is happening at Daley. CDs now stay
in the books. Stand-alone CDs are still under discussion.
7. Ellen (Rockford) mentioned that there was shabby workmanship with
bindery. Bob noted that Alex was in charge of bindery. Ellen will get
in touch with him to relay her concerns. We probably need to look at
this across the board.
Next meeting Sept. 28 instead of Sept. 21.
