CAMPUS NEWS

Campus Policy Under Extreme Weather and Emergency Conditions

Extreme Weather
As a matter of policy, the campus is never closed. The residential, health care, and research aspects of UIC operations make this a requirement.

In the event of extreme weather conditions, the campus will continue to operate during regularly scheduled hours. Staff members are expected to report to their respective offices or workstations. Staff members who are not able to commute to campus and who wish to be paid may request that the time missed be charged to vacation time or make other arrangements. These arrangements must meet all University rules and regulations and should be agreeable to the staff member's supervisor and unit head. You may call Patricia Gill, Interim Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, at 312-996-9305, for answers to questions on rules and regulations.

Cancellation of Individual Classes

In individual cases, there may be reasons for faculty members to cancel their classes. They must make certain that college and departmental offices are aware of such cancellations. If an individual class is canceled, all students registered in the class must be informed and it must be made up later in the semester.

Cancellation of All Scheduled Classes

In accordance with Executive Notice 94-3, classes will be canceled if, in the judgment of the Chancellor or the Provost, the health and safety of students, faculty, or staff would be seriously jeopardized. In this case, the Vice Chancellors will notify the units that report to them and the public affected will be notified by announcement over local radio and television stations.

Unfortunately, we cannot control the timing of the public notice or the wording of the announcement. Should you hear that the campus is "closed," you should know that, while classes have been canceled, offices are open and other special scheduled events may not have been canceled. Class closing announcements will be available by calling the UIC information line: 312-413-9696. Faculty and staff with non-instructional responsibilities are not excused when classes are canceled.

Medical Center
The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago and patient care support facilities operate continuously regardless of weather. Staff and students assigned to patient care and its supporting activities are expected to report to their respective offices or workstations even when the radio announcement indicates that classes have been canceled at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Emergency Conditions

Emergency conditions may occur that are sufficiently serious to warrant the cancellation of classes or public events or to temporarily discontinue non-essential general operations; i.e., university mail delivery or transportation services, and certain administrative functions. If an emergency occurs, or is anticipated, that would widely and adversely affect the campus, the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services will consult with representatives of campus components likely to be affected. An assessment of the current or anticipated conditions will include consideration of conditions that may jeopardize the health and safety of students, faculty, staff, patients or visitors.

If conditions warrant cancellation of classes or discontinuing non-essential services, the Vice Chancellors will be advised and the public affected will be notified by public announcements via local media. The Vice Chancellors will notify their respective reporting units via telephone or e-mail, as appropriate.

In the absence of a specific announcement to the contrary, classes and other functions will continue as scheduled. Staff members are expected to report for their regularly assigned duties.

OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION NEWS

The Future of Libraries on Public Radio
Soundprint, the longest-running documentary series in public radio, will begin airing a program dedicated to the future of libraries starting tomorrow, Nov. 11, 2004. American Library Association (ALA) President Carol Brey-Casiano was interviewed as part of more than a month's worth of reporting by producer Richard Paul.

Here's a short program description: "As more and more information is available on-line, as Amazon rolls out new software that allows anyone to find any passage in any book, an important question becomes: Who needs libraries anymore? Why does anyone need four walls filled with paper between covers? Surprisingly, they still do and in this program Producer Richard Paul explores why; looking at how university libraries, school libraries and public libraries have adapted to the new information world." Each SOUNDPRINT program explores one subject in depth, anything from tales of power in relationships to why sports are so popular in Chicago to the way a learning disabled child's brain looks different. Soundprint is broadcast weekly on several public radio stations nationwide, is available on satellite radio and can be heard in archive at www.soundprint.org.

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is pleased to announce the establishment of a Support Staff Grant. Underwritten by a generous contribution from Sage Publications, the Support Staff Grant will make it possible for an eligible individual (or individuals) to attend ALA Annual in Chicago in June 2005. Minimum of three years of experience in an area of technical services (acquisitions, cataloging, collection development/management, preservation of library materials, serials); No previous attendance at an ALA annual meeting.

Successful candidates will be required to submit a brief report describing their experiences at the annual conference. This report will be published in the post-conference issue of the ALCTS Newsletter Online and will also be shared with the sponsor.

Applicants need not be members of ALCTS or ALA.

The grant will cover conference registration, three nights hotel, and transportation.

The ALCTS Membership Committee will provide mentoring support for each candidate.

To apply:

Send a cover letter, resume and a brief essay (ca. 250 words) summarizing the reasons why attending the 2005 Annual Meeting of the American Library Association would be beneficial. MINUTES

•PDQ (Processing and Delivery Quadrant) Minutes, 10/27/04

PDQ Meeting
October 27, 2004

Attending:

Bob Daugherty, Emily Guss, Alex Bloss, Ellen Starkman, Ellen Schellhause, Ling Wang

Update on Programming, formerly called the Lisa list.

There was a great deal of discussion on what this list should contain, what reports are being asked for and who is asking. What information is available from which systems that people are able to get reports and what is the best way to let people know what is being generated? It seems many people are asking individually for reports directly to Lisa and others. It was decided by the committee that requests for reports should be directed to the Lib-Sys group. This will provide the group with a picture of what is being requested and how the information being requested can by used to benefit the entire library system.

Discussion ensued on the type of projects that are currently on this list and what should be included on the list in the future. All members participated in this discussion, and Bob Daugherty will compose a list of suggested projects to be submitted to PDQ at the November 9 meeting.

Binding:

Schellhause brought a recently received bound journal in for discussion on binding standards and if this type of work was typical or acceptable. It was decided to discuss this topic individually with each library, and the bindery representative.

Forms

Schellhause also brought up the many forms that must be filled out in cataloging, serials, and through out the library system. It was decided by the committee that many of them could be mounted electronically, filled out and submitted. Bob Daugherty will send query and recommendation to Steering Committee.

Next meeting: Nov. 9
