A Messge From Bob Rose,
Chair, ACRL 12th National Conference Volunteers Committee
The 12th National ACRL Conference Needs
You!
Would you:
|
|
|
Like to
gain the satisfaction of assisting your colleagues? |
|
|
|
Like to
meet new people and expand your professional network? |
|
|
|
Give something
back to the profession? |
|
|
|
Provide
some additional justification for attending the conference? |
If the answer to any of the above questions
is yes, the 12th National ACRL Conference in Minneapolis, Apr. 7-10,
2005 has something for you. To put on a successful conference requires
many volunteers to serve in such roles as meeting room assistants, event
ticket-takers or ushers, Hospitality Desk assistants, Internet Café
Assistants, and preconference assistants. No special expertise is required
for any of these responsibilities. This year a new "resume reviewing"
service will be offered. If you have experience in evaluating resumes
or assisting librarians in the preparation of resumes, your expertise
is needed to help library school students and others in preparing effective
resumes.
What do you need to do to volunteer?
|
|
|
Be prepared to give
an hour or two of your time |
|
|
|
E-mail Volunteers Committee
chair, Bob Rose, at roserf@uwec.edu. |
Please include your name, mailing address,
email address, phone number, and dates available (if known).
|
|
|
If you have already
volunteered via the conference registration form, no further action
is necessary. |
|
|
|
Provide
a brief statement of your experience and qualifications to be a
resume reviewer - if you want to volunteer for that service. |
|
|
|
And of course, you
will need to register (and pay) to attend the conference. |
Remember - early bird registration
for the conference ends Feb. 7, 2005.
A
Messge From David Carlson on Behalf of the Vision and Leadership
Transition Team
On behalf of the Vision and Leadership
Transition Team (VLT) I am pleased to announce the release of our final
report and recommendations. As you will read, we are calling for a new
organization: The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois,
CARLI.
You will find the full text of all materials at the VLT web site. All files are in pdf format
(reminder: pdf files can be large in size - I don't recommend that you
retrieve these files from a home dial-up computer). At the web site,
documents are listed individually but there is also a "mega-link" which,
if selected will provide the pdf copy of all documents. I recommend
that you start with the final report, which is the first document listed.
All associated documents are discussed and linked in the text of the
final report.
With the release of these documents, we turn these matters over to the
academic/research library community in Illinois for consideration and,
we hope, adoption. You will have an opportunity to participate through
your membership, as appropriate, in one or more of the three consortia:
ICCMP, IDAL, and ILCSO.
It would be redundant for me to state in this email the information
that is contained in our report and associated documents. But I do want
to take a personal prerogative as chair of the VLT for two other matters.
First, I want to recognize the membership of the VLT. My recognition
is more than the cursory thank-you that is common to the members of
a committee when their task is complete. The Illinois academic/research
library community has been very well represented in this process by
the members of the VLT who are listed at the end of the report. Each
member of the VLT participated fully and was wholly engaged throughout
this process. The commitment by each of these individuals through a
regular series of meetings over many months at various locations throughout
the state was exceptional. In addition, all members had responsibility
for the development of one or more of the documents and in every case,
commitments made were commitments met.
Second, I want to make special recognition of a particular individual,
Dave Stewart. Fundamentally, our discussions and recommendations are
about change and change is always difficult. By virtue of his position,
Dave is at the center of these changes. Throughout this process, I have
admired the manner in which Dave has conducted himself and participated
in these discussions. He has been fully engaged, as all members have
been, but he has also been uniquely objective, professional, and open
to what I am sure were some difficult conversations. He deserves special
recognition and thanks.
The recommendations and documents now before you are our best efforts
to effect the change called for by CAL and Team Illinois. I will not
maintain that our proposals are perfect and without flaw. But there
is no question in my mind that this is a significant step forward and
will establish an agile, membership-driven organization. Our libraries
and our institutions are constantly evolving; if approved, this new
organization will evolve as well. This is a new approach and establishes
a foundation that will permit a re-kindling of library cooperation and
a renewal of national leadership for academic/research libraries in
Illinois reflective of our history, ability, and promise.

Steering Committee Meeting,
01/05/05
Minutes
of Steering Committee meeting of Jan. 5, 2005.
Attending: R. Daugherty, D. Bicknese, A. Ford, S. Jacobson, F. Logan,
W. Jones, J. Hurd, C. Scherrer, G. Lagana, A. Bloss, J. Lambrecht (Chair),
M. Case, J. Canlas, E. Guss, E. Schellhause, M. Berta, J. Dorsch, J.
Shuler, V. Pifalo, E. Starkman, H. Malinowsky (Recorder)
Meeting called to order at 9 a.m. by J. Lambrecht.
Minutes for meeting of Dec. 8, 2004, were approved.
Brief updates:
Reactions to reduced services week— one complaint that Daley was
not open. LHS, Sites, and Science Library had moderate use. Closing
created a backlog of incoming books and serial current issues. It is
noted that when emergency staff entered the building there did not seem
to be any change in the heat, in fact it was warmer than when the library
was open.
Possible extended meeting of 1/26—Spending priorities for equipment
will be discussed with a focus on M. Case’s FY 2006-2007 budget
presentation to the Provost and Deans.
Possible meeting on 2/9—M. Case would like to present her budget
proposal to the Provost and deans.
Taking responsibility for “Organizational Issues”—A
spreadsheet prepared by J. Canlas was distributed prior to the meeting.
This spreadsheet was the result of a previous planning session where
members of the Steering Committee indicated their concerns and needs
for the library. There was a discussion of the first item on Communication
that covered diversity of user needs, accessibility to electronic resources,
and mechanism for dealing with user complaints. No substantive conclusions
were made. J. Lambrecht instructed the members of the Steering Committee
to look at the spreadsheet and see if there are any items that each
could take ownership of. This will be discussed at a future meeting.
Organizing Public Services in a better way—J. Shuler and his task
force will be preparing a report. J. Shuler pointed out that there were
four user perspectives that will dictate what the report will show:
1. Services that orient users to the library and its collections; 2.
Services that show how to research materials in the library; 3. Services
that help to identify and use resources outside the UIC Library; and
4. Services that show how to select materials for the library. It was
suggested that the work of Shuler and Dorsch be coordinated with the
work of the 2010 Committee in order to eliminate overlap.
Organizing Technical Services in a better way—A spirited discussion
was had on what technical services mean.
J. Dorsch gave an update on USE and indicated that the Ask a Librarian
service was going very well. There is a need to advertise this service
for the coming semester.
The deadline for PromptCat implementation has been moved to Jan. 31,
2005.
Meeting adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
