Chicago Woman's Aid was an active women's organization for 106 years, from 1882 to 1988. Members saw themselves as a civic organization that worked to fill various needs in the larger Chicago community as well as in the Chicago Jewish community. Dr. Hast's paper will focus on several of the club's long-range projects between 1920 and 1960. CWA was active in promoting birth control. Members worked in the public schools, especially in matters of health and well being. They became involved in civic reform in Chicago.

UIC Office of Public Affairs Annonuces: UIC and Daley Family Host 50th Anniversary of Richard J. Daley's
Mayoral Inauguration

First Annual Richard J. Daley Urban Forum and Gala to Celebrate Mayor's Legacy, Benefit UIC

The accomplishments of Mayor Richard J. Daley and his imprint on urban policy and national politics will be recognized April 20 at an academic symposium and celebrated at a gala benefit marking the 50th anniversary of his first inauguration as mayor of Chicago, it was announced today by the Daley family and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, former Vice President Walter F. Mondale, former New York Mayor Ed Koch, presidential historian Michael Bechloss and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young are among those headlining the day's events, to be held on the UIC campus, City Hall and Block 37.

Also participating will be former Sen. Adlai E. Stevenson III, former Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, one-time Democratic National Committee Chairman and Ambassador to the Soviet Union Robert Strauss, Mayor Richard M. Daley, and attorney Newton Minow, Federal Communications Commission chairman in the early 1960s and campaign aide to President John F. Kennedy.

Other speakers include New York Times political writer and editor R.W. Apple, Ralph Johnson, principal designer at Perkins and Will, Robert Remini, historian and professor emeritus at UIC and Raymond F. Simon, former administration officer under the late Mayor Daley.

Several prominent Chicago journalists also will participate in the symposium including, F. Richard Ciccone, former managing editor of the Chicago Tribune and author of "Daley: Power and Presidential Politics"; Bob Crawford, retired political editor, WBBM-AM; Carol Marin, investigative reporter, NBC-5 and columnist, Chicago Sun-Times; and Robert Novak, nationally syndicated columnist.

The inaugural Richard J. Daley Urban Forum of UIC is entitled "Learning from the Legacy: 1955-2005." Featured panels include "Urban Politics, Race and Ethnicity," "The Mayor and the Media" and "Mayor Richard J. Daley: A Legacy of Achievement."

The UIC symposium will be followed by a gala reception and benefit at City Hall and Block 37, with Kennedy as keynote speaker. Proceeds will benefit the Richard J. and Eleanor Daley Archive, donated to UIC in 2002 by the Daley family. Funds raised at the event also will benefit future symposia, academic books and technology for UIC's Richard J. Daley Library and help provide student scholarships.

"Richard Daley was one of America's all-time great mayors, and I wouldn't miss this golden anniversary of his inauguration," said Kennedy. "The luck of the Irish blessed both of our families, and we had immense respect for all he did for the city of Chicago and the Democratic Party. I know how much my brothers admired his leadership and valued his friendship, and so did I. It was easy to see why he was so often called 'the man who made Chicago work,' and I look forward to the chance in April to pay tribute to a true giant of our time."

Establishment of UIC -- originally known as the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle when it opened in 1965 -- was described by the late mayor as his greatest contribution to the life of the city. Circle Campus merged with the university's Medical Campus in 1982 to form UIC. The campus has more than 145,000 alumni, more than 110,000 of whom live in the Chicago metropolitan area.

"Richard J. Daley stands as a towering figure in the history of Chicago and in the annals of 20th century American government and politics," said UIC Chancellor Sylvia Manning. "It is fitting on this 50th anniversary of his inauguration to reflect on the mayor's achievements and lasting impact on Chicago, and for his legacy to serve as a platform for the ongoing study of urban issues in 21st century America. It is also appropriate that funds raised through these events will advance the university campus he worked so hard to establish."

The Richard J. Daley Urban Forum at UIC will be an annual symposium for students, scholars, public officials, civic leaders, policy makers and commentators to discuss important issues and share insights into American urban history and urban studies.

The gala and symposium will be privately funded through the generosity of three longtime Chicago companies. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Exelon Corporation (parent company of ComEd) are Underwriting Sponsors and BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois is Presenting Sponsor.

Another longtime Chicago company, United Airlines, is the official carrier of the Richard J. Daley Urban Forum, providing air transportation for symposium speakers.

The six surviving children of Richard J. and Eleanor "Sis" Daley will participate in the April 20 commemoration.

"We are extremely proud of our father, whose devotion to this city and its people was the foundation for Chicago's emergence in the latter half of the 20th century as a great American city and one of the country's few truly global cities," said William M. Daley, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and now chairman of Midwest operations of JPMorgan Chase. "We are honored to participate in these commemorative events to ensure that our father's achievements will endure for years to come through academic research, important conversations about challenges facing urban America and scholarships for talented and deserving young people of Chicago," he said.

The five other surviving children are, in order of age: Patricia Daley Martino, Mary Carol Vanecko, Mayor Richard M. Daley, attorney Michael Daley, and Cook County Commissioner John Daley. The seventh sibling, Eleanor Daley, died in 1998. Third- and fourth-generation family members also will take part in the celebration.

Commemorative events also will include an exhibition in Daley Center open to the public featuring an initial selection of photos from the Richard J. and Eleanor Daley Archive.

The archive -- which includes photographs, film, letters, official documents, speeches and other materials -- is currently being processed and catalogued, a process expected to take several years. Controlled access to the archives will begin once the processing and cataloguing is completed and the university has published protocols for their access. It is anticipated the protocols will be similar to those used at presidential libraries and for other historic collections.

Richard J. Daley was first inaugurated as Mayor of Chicago on April 20, 1955. He served as mayor for more than two decades, during which time he oversaw the rebirth of Chicago's downtown, construction of McCormick Place, development of O'Hare International Airport, and establishment of UIC among other notable achievements. He played a major role in national politics through his support of Democratic presidential candidates and his forceful advocacy for federal funding of local government programs and infrastructure.

The dean of the UIC Graduate College, Clark Hulse, is academic coordinator for the inaugural Richard J. Daley Urban Forum and curator for the exhibition. Hulse also is professor of English and art history at UIC, and curated an exhibition about England's Queen Elizabeth I that is currently touring the United States.

UIC is Chicago's largest university with 25,000 students, 12,000 faculty and staff, 15 colleges and the state's major public medical center. The campus also ranks among the nation's top 50 universities in federal research funding. A hallmark of UIC is the Great Cities Commitment, through which faculty, students and staff engage with community, corporate, foundation and government partners in hundreds of programs to improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas around the world.

For more information on the academic symposium or to register, please visit http://www.uic.edu/orgs/daleyforum/index.html or call (312) 573-5480. Public tickets are limited due to space constraints and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
