The library website looks or acts strangely with my web browser.
The library website generally, and UICCAT in particular, require a browser with Java and Javascript activated for full functionality. The preferred browser to use with the Library's website is Internet Explorer, version 5 or above. While Netscape version 7 or above and Netscape Navigator versions 4.6 and 4.7 will work with the library's website, they will not display all pages correctly. In addition, some of the resources to which the library provides access do not work properly with any version of the Netscape software.
Browser Information
Microsoft Internet Explorer
version 5.0: minimally acceptable, but some items may not display properly and some catalog function will be impaired
version 6.0.2 and above: compatible, with correct display.
Netscape/Mozilla
Navigator/Communicator version 4.0-4.7X: will not display catalog or other resources correctly.
Netscape version 6.X or 7.X/Mozilla version 1.0 and above: will display UICCAT catalog items correctly, although certain aspects of the general library website and several other resources have compatibility problems with the Netscape/Mozilla browsers.
Opera for PC or Macintosh Safari for Macintosh system 10.2 and above iCab for Macintosh
The library has not extensively tested these browsers with our site or resources; from users' comments, it seems that the security/cookie functions of these browsers may not work properly with the library's catalog, proxy server, and other resources.
Whatever browser you have, it MUST be set to allow all cookies -- some of our outside resources set what are called "third-party" cookies -- and Java and Javascript must be active.
Any browser not mentioned in the list above has not been tested with the library's website, proxy server or other resources, and may be presumed not to work or to be supported by the library's staff.
I can't access the web at all. What's the problem?
If you cannot access the web, there may be problems with your browser or with your physical connections to the web (phone line and modem, or cable).
If you are coming in from an outside Internet Service Provider (eg, AOL, MSN, Earthlink, Interaccess, etc.), contact their help desk.
If you are on-campus and cannot reach the website, contact first the person in your department who installs and configures in your department, then Academic Computing, and if neither of them can help, the library.
I have AOL and I'm using the AOL browser, but I can't get the website or UICCAT to work properly.
The AOL browser has known problems that prevent it from working properly with some of the library's resources, and specifically with the library's catalog. UICCAT requires a Java-capable browser, such as Internet Explorer or some versions of Netscape, to work properly. Please see the note above regarding the browsers you should use for the library website and resources. Also please note: UICCAT is also set to time out after 5 minutes of inactivity, so if you haven't clicked on a record in five minutes, you will automatically be disconnected.
The University Library holds campuswide site licenses to many
electronic resources to provide the university community with a wide
variety of high-quality resources. Some databases require campus user ids and passwords. Others such as Britannica Online or Ovid allow access only from machines whose domain name ends in uic.edu. For these latter resources, if you are off-campus, you must be connected
to the Internet via the UIC dialin service, or if you have your own internet services provider, you must authenticate, using your netID and password, through the library's proxy server.
When you click on a link to one of the library's restricted resources, the UIC WWW Authentication service will ask you for your netID and password. Once you are verified as a member of the UIC faculty, staff, or students, you will be allowed into the desired resources.
I am having trouble filling out forms in LIBMAIL with a
text browser
If you have a graphical browser such as Netscape or Internet
Explorer on your computer, you should use that. If you need to use
text-browsers for some reason (a visual disability, for instance), please
see the help for text browsers document.
I connect to the system OK, but I don't understand how
to search it -- I'm not pulling up the right results.
