Alumni Volunteer Opportunities

With over 2,600 culturally and economically diverse medical students and trainees, there is a tremendous need for alumni volunteers. By volunteering, you can help improve student experiences at the UIC College of Medicine. Alumni involvement not only demonstrates college pride to our future alumni, but can also make an impact on their medical education and career direction.

There are many opportunities to get involved with your medical alma mater.

Alumni Advocates Program

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine Alumni Advocates program is a group of medical and scientific alumni leaders with expertise in a variety of specialties. Alumni Advocates are listed by specialty and can be in residency programs, currently practicing or retired.

Interested medical students will contact advocates by the provided email links and share questions related to specialty choices, residency programs or other career related topics. Advocates respond to students based on their availability, but are encouraged to do so within 10 days. Chain emails, spam or any other contact unrelated to the Alumni Advocates program are strictly prohibited.

Admission Interviews

Each year, the College receives 4,000-5,000 applications. Of these, we select 800-900 well-qualified applicants to be interviewed. The interview season starts in September and continues until May. Each month, there are approximately five interview dates at Chicago with both morning and afternoon sessions. Out-of-state alumni are greatly welcomed to participate! To volunteer, please contact Garie-Pierre Louis at (312) 413-0114 or via email at gariepl@uic.edu

Mentorship: The Longitudinal Primary Care Program

The Longitudinal Primary Care (LPC) program is an element within the Essentials of Clinical Medicine course. LPC pairs pre-clinical students with practicing physicians in a one-on-one mentoring/instructional relationship. The LPC Program is required of all first year medical students and is available in the second year should the preceptor desire to continue. LPC is designed to provide immediate exposure to the work of physician preceptors in one of the four primary care settings: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Practice and Womens' Health.

A student will visit the preceptor’s office 9 times during their first year. Sessions focus on achieving competence in medical interviewing, patient care and coordination of care. The LPC program will match the student with a physician in the Chicago area. Orientation is provided to LPC program volunteers. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact David Mayer, Health Professions Education, dmayer1@uic.edu

Student Run Free Clinic

Since 2001, UIC medical students have coordinated and sponsored a free clinic night at Community Health (2611 W Chicago Ave), a local Chicago free clinic designated to provide healthcare to the uninsured.
Every Tuesday from 5-10PM, UIC students see 12-15 patients, with a focus ranging from family practice and internal medicine to pediatric and gynecology care. Attendings and residents from UIC and other Chicago hospitals volunteer to staff the nights along with students and interpreters from the College of Medicine.

Preceptors are in need and your help is always appreciated. If you would like to participate as an attending, please contact Yalda Afshar at yafsha2@uic.edu.
