College of Medicine: Office of Faculty Affairs
Faculty Awards
University
Scholar Award
The University Scholars Program
is designed to identify outstanding members of the faculty and to provide
each with a modest amount of funds annually for a defined number of
years. The importance of these awards lies in the flexibility with which
the funds may be spent. Recipients may use the funds at their discretion
to enhance their scholarly work, except for salary rate increases, which
are not permitted. The awards are not made for a specific project or
proposal; rather, they are a symbol of the recipient's excellence and
the University's commitment to foster outstanding people and their work.
Therefore, the awards are made through nominations, not by application.
Awards of $10,000 per year
will be made on a three-year basis to members of the faculty whose work
is clearly superior. University Scholars may be individuals already
on the University of Illinois faculty, or the awards may be used to
attract faculty from other institutions to the University. Nominees
for these awards will be carefully screened to assure that those selected
are among the very best in their fields.
Nominations for the 2008-09
cycle are due in the Faculty Affairs Office on Wednesday February 11, 2009.
Please see the nomination guidelines above for further details.
IMPORTANT: COLLEGE
OF MEDICINE NOMINATIONS MAY NOT BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE OFFICE OF THE
PROVOST, BUT RATHER MUST BE REVIEWED BY THE COLLEGE COMMITTEE
ON FACULTY AWARDS AND RECEIVE THE ENDORSEMENT OF THE DEAN.

UIC
Distinguished Professor Award
This appointment was created
to recruit and recognize persons who have made a significant impact
upon their field through scholarship, creativity and leadership.
Professors selected for the award will receive a non-salaried, non-service
appointment as UIC Distinguished Professor which will be effective with
the next appointment year. A review panel will make recommendations
to the Provost who will submit names to the University Board of Trustees
for approval.
The campus deadline for this year's internal nominations is Friday, February 20, 2009. However, department heads are asked to submit the names of any proposed nominees to Vice Dean Kilpatrick well in advance of this deadline, so that a decision may be made as to which nominations will be put forward by the College. Additional documentation such as external letters of support should not be solicited until the Dean's Office has given approval to proceed with the development of a nominations packet.

Faculty
of the Year Award
In 1996, the College Committee
on Faculty Awards assumed the responsibility for selecting the Faculty
of the Year Award recipient. This award recognizes outstanding achievements
in several aspects of the College's mission and is a distinct honor
for the faculty member and his/her home department. Each College of
Medicine site chooses one nomination and forwards the selection to the
Faculty Awards Committee. All full time and part time faculty of the
College of Medicine are eligible for this award, which is presented
to the selected faculty member at the Convocation Ceremony at his/her
site.
Faculty at the
Peoria, Rockford and Urbana campuses may submit nominations through their
local selection committee. Questions about deadlines should be directed
to the Regional Dean's Office at each campus.
Chicago nominations for this year's cycle are due in the Faculty Affairs Office on March 6, 2009. Please see the nomination guidelines above for further details.

Distinguished
Faculty Award
The College of Medicine at
Chicago annually reviews nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Award, which is presented to a senior
faculty member in recognition of the recipient's excellence in research,
service to the profession, or distinction as an educator. The expectation
is that this honor will go to an individual who has fulfilled the highest
goals of an academician and is nationally or internationally recognized
for his or her achievements. The Distinguished Faculty Award is presented
at the College's Commencement Ceremony.
Nomination packets must follow the format outlined in the nomination guidelines (see above link). This year's deadline for Distinguished Faculty nominations is March 23, 2009.
Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J Glaser Distinguished Teacher Awards
The Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Awards recognize the significant contributions to medical education made by gifted teachers. Special consideration will be given to those who have published in medical education and whose educational materials have been adopted by other institutions. Up to four awards will be granted each year. Each awardee will receive a $10,000 grant. The awardee's nominating institution will receive $2,500 for teaching activities, and, if the nominating institution has an AOA chapter, the chapter will receive a stipend of $1,000 toward its activities.
Each medical school in the United States and Canada may nominate one faculty member. The nomination is made by the Dean.
The College Committee on Faculty Awards reviews nominations and recommends to the Dean the faculty member who will represent the College in the national competition.
The deadline for the submission of nominations for 2009 has not yet been established but is likely to fall in early April. Materials may be sent electronically to Loreen Troy at ltroy@uic.edu, or in hard copy to Dr. Leslie Sandlow, Room 105 CMW (M/C 784), 1853 West Polk St., Chicago, IL 60612. Submissions must include the nominating form, the candidate's CV, and a copy of the candidate's complete bibliography.
The AAMC encourages a process that provides for broad student input as well as the peer judgment of faculty colleagues. Students will be invited to endorse candidates they favor and their comments will be forwarded to the Faculty Awards Committee prior to its deliberations.
