¡ESCUCHA!
Student Network
What
is the ¡ESCUCHA! Student Network?
The ¡ESCUCHA!
Student Network is designed to recruit, advise and mentor
high school, undergraduate and medical school students
whose goal is to pursue a career in medicine. It was established
in 1992 to support Latinos interested in medicine. The
Network informs students about various academic experiences
available thoughout the year as well as information about
the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.
Who participates?
¡ESCUCHA! Membership is comprised of Latino medical,
undergraduate, and high school students. The purpose of
the network is the recruitment and education of students
regarding medical education, health professions, and health
care issues in the Latino community. The Network was established
in 1992 as a support mechanism for Latino students. Students
from the following schools: Aspira of Illinois, Benito
Juarez High School, Bogan High School, DePaul University,
Lakeview High School, Lane Technical High School, Lincoln
Park High School, Loyola University of Chicago, Northeastern
Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern
University, Robert Clemente Community Academy, The University
of Illinois at Chicago, The University of Illinois at
Chicago-College of Medicine, The University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign-College
of Medicine, Senn Metropolitan Academy, Stritch School
of Medicine, St. Ignatius College Prep, Whitney Young
High School, just to name a few schools. Through the network
we provide students with the necessary resources to successfully
enter and complete a medical education. As a group, we
share the vision of reducing the number of preventable
illnesses among the Latino community, as well as increasing
the number of Latino physicians in the community. As such,
we will continue to address the concerns of our communities
on the health issues and policies that affect us.
When do we meet?
The ¡ESCUCHA! Student Network meets 6 times a year
at the University of Illinois at Chicago-College of Medicine.
All meetings are held on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon,
to allow students from Chicago and surrounding suburbs
to participate. Each meeting is divided into three parts;
the first is information that the HCOE shares with students;
the second is a featured guest speaker who addresses health
issues related to Latinos; and the third is where students
share information about ongoing activities at their schools.
