MEDICAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

REMINDER: Start filling out the “Federal Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) early and request a PIN (personal identification number). The easiest way to do this is online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ You will need to do this for many loans and grants.

  • Albert Schweitzer Fellows Program: The Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program, a program of The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship and the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group, provides service opportunities and support for aspiring health professionals who seek to help the underserved in Chicago and its surrounding communities.  Applications must be received by 5 PM on Friday, February 3, 2006, preferably by email attachment (in Microsoft Word).  Please send to rwang@hmprg.org .  Please visit: http://www.schweitzerfellowship.org/features/us/chi/chi_app.aspx
 
  • American Medical Association Foundation: As the cost of medical education continues to increase, financial assistance for medical students is more important than ever.   • Daughters of the American Revolution Medical Scholarships: These awards are in the amount of $5,000 annually for up to four years, with a maximum of $20,000 total. These awards are available only in consecutive four year increments. It is only necessary to submit one application for consideration for any award in this group.   • Dr. Jose Ignacio Choca Scholarship: The Dr. Choca scholarship is an award in honor of the late great educator and doctor of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Applications must be hand delivered or postmarked no later than March 1st, 2007.

  • Fogarty/Ellison Overseas Fellowship Program: The program is offering a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate level U.S. students in the health professions. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in a diverse group of countries, such as Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia.   • Hispanic Illinois State Law Enforcement Association (HILSEA): For college students who demonstrate leadership qualities, as well as community involvement. When applying, mention that UI-CCOM uses P/F, not GPA with transcripts. http://www.hislea.org/htm/hisleascholarships.htm


  • Hispanocare, Inc. Scholarship Fund: Provides unrestricted scholarships (i.e. can be used for room & board, books, tuition, etc…) for Latino-American college students. Call Lucy Robles-Aquino Chief Executive Officer or Isabel Diaz at (773) 296-7157.
  • Illinois Department of Public Health Medical Student Scholarship Program: Provides tuition, mandatory fees, and a monthly stipend of $950 per month to students enrolled at approved medical schools in Illinois. The recipient agrees to work in primary care physician-shortage area in Illinois for one year for each year of assistance received through this program http://www.idph.state.il.us/about/rural_health/rural_scholarship.htm


  • Illinois General Assembly (GA) Scholarship: Covers tuition for students who are enrolled at Illinois four-year, public colleges and universities. You may apply with both your state rep and state senator by asking them for an application. Go to the “Legislator Lookup” link at http://www.legis.state.il.us/
  • La Unidad Latina Foundation: The La Unidad Latina Foundation was established in 1999 to serve as an independent, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to educational achievement and civic empowerm ent in the Latino community.   • National Hispanic Scholarship Fund: At least one parent must be full Hispanic, or both parents must be half-Hispanic -- e.g., Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Caribbean, Central or South American heritage) who are enrolled in a graduate program. Applicant must be a U. S. citizen or a Permanent Resident.   • Tylenol Scholarship: Tylenol is giving away $250,000 in scholarships to students pursuing careers in healthcare. $10,000 and $1,000 grants are available for undergraduate and post-graduate study.
