Throughout the
year, the Center sponsors a series of programs for Latino
students designed to enhance their educational experience.
Advising
The Hispanic Center of Excellence also provides extensive
advising for Latino medical, pre-med students as well
as assistance to recruit, train, and retain Latino medical
students.

¡ESCUCHA!
Network
The ESCUCHA Student Network is a program structured to
help recruit, mentor, and advise students at the high
school, under graduate and medical school levels. The
Network collaborates with Latino student organizations
and Latino students interested in pursing a career in
medicine. ESCUCHA provides exposure to our faculty, primary
care and various specialties, as well as valuable sessions
to help students at all levels attain their goals. The
Network is instrumental in increasing the number of applicants
to medical school. More
Leadership
Development Conference
An annual conference held in the spring, providing workshops
to develop and enhance leadership skills, strengthen organization
and advocacy skills. This seminar provides a foundation
of increased confidence, problem solving and awareness
of national Latino health care issues. Ultimately, assisting
pre-med and medical students in becoming leaders in the
health professions. More
Medicina

New!
A
unique three year program to train future Latino physician-leaders.
The program will provide early and longitudinal exposure
to a career in medicine, public health policies and Latino
health care issues.
Summer
Medical Student Research Fellowship Program
A ten-week summer program designed to introduce UIC medical
students in their first year to the field of research.
The program provides students an opportunity to enhance
their curriculum vitae with this experience, submit their
findings in local and national poster sessions, and ultimately
get published. Selected students are matched with a preceptor
and provided a stipend. Students build research skills
and learn techniques that enhance their knowledge of bench
and beside treatment of patients. Some medical students
are invited to continue their research during the academic
year. More
Urban
Medicine & Cultural Competence Courses
Curricular development and enrichment providing the best
practices in diagnosis of patients to improve patient/
doctor relationship, reduce health risks, and health care
disparities. These courses provide medical students with
an understanding of cultural beliefs knowledge and skills
to best treat their patients.
