USMLE Step I Exam
As per Academic Promotions Policy students who complete satisfactorily all M2 curricular requirements, which include passing the USMLE Step 1, will be promoted to the M3 year. Students who have taken USMLE Step 1 will be allowed to begin M3 core clerkships, pending the results. Students who want to delay taking the examination until after the beginning of clerkships must petition their student affairs dean for approval. Students who delay taking USMLE Step1 may not begin clerkships until after they take the examination.

Key information about this important exam:

Free USMLE Test Preparation Resource
The Library of the Health Sciences' liaison suggests a FREE resource that may be helpful in getting students ready for the USMLE. It's called USMLEasy and provides interactive practice questions for the Steps 1, 2, and 3 exams. The Library subscribes to it via AccessMedicine http://proxy.cc.uic.edu/login?url=http://www.accessmedicine.com/

USMLE Step I Mock Exams
It is strongly recommended that students studying for their Step 1 exam take a mock exam about 2 to 2-1/2 weeks before the scheduled exam date.  There are two that are available:

  • Comprehensive Basic Sciences Self-Assessment (CBSSA), uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered during basic science medical education. The content of the CBSSA items resembles the content of those in USMLE Step 1. Two unique forms of the CBSSA are available for a fee of $45.00 each, payable by credit card or money order. Details: http://www.nbme.org/sas
  • Another exam is available from the University of Missouri at Kansas City - umkc.edu/ipp ---> computer based testing.  The cost is $45.

If your score on the mock exam is not in the desired range, you can postpone the exam by perhaps a week.  Please remember, though, that you must sit for the exam before starting rotations and if you need to postpone the exam beyond the start of rotations, you need to submit a petition and detailed study plan to Dean Kashima.
