College of Medicine’s Urban Health Program (UIC-COM UHP) PROGRAMS
The UIC-COM UHP
offers a variety programs and services for high school students to faculty and
alumni from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups. These comprehensive programs are designed to
expose students to the medical profession, prepare the next generation of physicians
for service in medically underserved areas and provide professional development
to current physicians with the ultimate goal of reducing health disparities,
specifically in the state of Illinois. Below is the list of the services/programs that we provide:
For High School
Students:

Health Career Opportunity Clubs – several HCOP clubs have been
set-up at various high schools throughout Chicago wherein students participate
in this Academic year program that highlight health
professions and biomedical science careers for high
school students highlighting
health and biomedical careers

Annual Medical Day – Every the
College of Medicine UHP, in conjunction
with The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) along with LaRaza Medical Student Association (LaRaMA),
host an Annual Med Day for High School students with an interest in health
sciences. There will be anatomy and pathology lab hands on demonstrations and
presentations; Medical student panel for students to ask questions; Vital signs
workshop for students to learn how to take; blood pressure, heart rate, etc.;
lifestyle workshop including nutrition, etc and more.
For College Students:
- MCAT Prep: 7-week, summer program designed to prepare students to navigate the medical school admission process successfully.
- Post-baccalaureate Admission Program: 11-month, conditional admission program, for
consideration, one must apply for traditional admission to UIC-COM through
the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS)
- Summer
Pre-matriculation Program: The University Of Illinois College Of Medicine Urban Health Program’s (COM-UHP) Summer Pre-matriculation Program (SPP) is a seven-week academic enrichment program that aims to help bolster students’ basic medical science knowledge. SPP encourages the development of professional and peer support networks during the summer prior to matriculation in the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. SPP is specifically designed for students who have been conditionally admitted to the COM.
The SPP Program normally takes place on end of May – beginning of July.
