HCOP-C: Health Careers Opportunity Programs Club

 

September of each year, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine-UHP conducts the Health Careers Opportunity Program Club (HCOP-C).  UHP-HCOP in conjunction with Chicago State University, will provide an opportunity for (50) students to experience opportunities in health and biomedical careers.  Participants will be provided monthly field trips, mini-workshops, roundtable and panel discussions, focusing on topics related to a wide variety of health and biomedical careers. Topics will cover academic requirements and career opportunities (Medicine, Osteopathy, Veterinary Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy, Podiatry, and Public Health), biomedical careers and Masters/Ph.D. Programs. Structured hands-on clinical and laboratory experiences will be planned.

 

Eligibility for Participants:

  1. Must be from an educationally disadvantaged background, denoted as one who comes from an environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to enroll in and graduate from a health professional school, or from a program providing education or training in an allied health profession; OR

 

Must be from an economically disadvantaged background, denoted as one who comes from a family with an annual income below a level based on low-income threshold according to family size, published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census; AND

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or a foreign national who possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States; AND
  2. Must be enrolled in one of the Chicago area high schools; AND
  3. Must complete program application; AND
  4. Must submit (3) reference letters; one from lead counselor; AND
  5. Must express interest in pursuing a health or biomedical career; AND
  6. Participate in an interview for consideration.
