ABOUT UIC
One of two campuses of the University of Illinois (UIC), UIC was established in 1982 by a merger of the University's Chicago Circle and Medical Center campuses. UIC is the largest institution of higher learning in the Chicago area, one of the top seventy research universities in the United States, and an increasingly significant center for education, research, and public service. The University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics provide health care to more than a quarter of a million people.
The University of Illinois at Chicago is committed to excellence in education, research, and public service to the urban community. In addition to full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, UIC offers day and evening courses, full- and part-time study, informal courses, and continuing education programs. The medical student honorary society Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), was founded at our University. Click here to view the UIC home page .
CAMPUS
The UIC campus is located just west of Chicago's Loop. It has over 78 buildings on approximately 183 acres, bounded on the east by Clinton Street and on the west by Leavitt Street. Most of the campus is south of the eisenhower expressway and north of Roosevelt Road. Current value of UIC's land, buildings, and equipment is estimated at more than $1 billion dollars. This area includes two historical landmark neighborhoods and the State of Illinois Medical Center District, which contains the world's largest concentration of advanced public and private health care facilities. UIC also has health professions programs in Rockford, Peoria, the Quad cities, and Urbana-Champaign. Click here for travel information , Chicago's weather and the City of Chicago 's home page.
COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS
UIC's fifteen colleges and schools offer bachelor's degree programs in ninety-nine fields, master's degrees in ninety-three areas, and doctoral degrees in fifty-four specializations.
GOVERNANCE
The elected Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois is responsible for examining and defining broad policy and financial issues. The chief officer of the University of Illinois, the president, reports to the board, initiates and guides overall University development. The two campuses of the University, at Urbana and Chicago, are each governed by a chancellor who reports to the president. The chancellor is the chief academic/administrative officer of the campus. Nine members of the Board of Trustees of the University are elected by the citizens of the state; students elect two non-voting members. The governor of Illinois is a member, ex-officio.
FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS
The UIC faculty numbers approximately 11,000 full-time faculty and support staff. The faculty includes noted scholars and researchers, many of whom have gained national and international recognition for their work. UIC has an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students, of whom 65% are undergraduate and 35% are graduate degree students. The student body includes more than 1,200 international, nonimmigrant students from over seventy countries around the world who are enrolled in UIC's undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Graduate students in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Training Program must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Click here for MCBTP faculty .
LIBRARIES
More than 1.5 million volumes are housed in the University Library and specialized collections, which include the Mathematics Library, Architecture and Art Library, Science Library, and the Library of the Health Sciences, which itself is one of the largest of its kind in the country. The Library of the Health Sciences serves as the National Medical Library's Midwest Depository holding more than 800,000 items and maintains significant manuscript and rare book collections. It also provides computer search and interlibrary loan services.
RESEARCH
Sponsored research support at UIC is substantial--with about $100 million in federal funds received annually. This is expected to increase with existing and new interdisciplinary programs within UIC's schools, colleges, and departments. Additionally, an increased emphasis on partnership with private industry, particularly in emerging scientific growth areas links academic research with industrial application.
HEALTH CARE SERVICES
The University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics, recognized as the preeminent teaching hospital of the state of Illinois, provide health care to more than a quarter million people annually. Innovative research and clinical programs, that attract patients, specialists, and financial support from throughout the nation, continue to add to UIC's leadership role in health care improvement. The University of Illinois at Chicago is affiliated with Michael Reese Hospital and the Metro Group, a network of Chicago-area hospitals that provide a wide range of educational and clinical experiences for the College of Medicine and other health care students at the University.
ATHLETICS AND RECREATION
UIC teams, the Flames, compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level and are affiliated with the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, the Association of Mid-Continent Universities, and the North Star Conference. The intercollegiate program offers fifteen men's and women's varsity sports. Many intramural and recreational activities are provided for students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
UIC PAVILION
The UIC Pavilion is an entertainment/sports/convention arena for a variety of events including basketball, hockey, indoor soccer, rock shows, ice shows, conferences, and convocations. Completed in 1982, this multipurpose arena seats up to 12,000 spectators and is the largest collegiate ice hockey facility in the nation.
